Phil Collins Bio
Phil Collins

Phil Collins was born in London in 1951 and entered a stage school at 14 years old. He was a child actor and model, and his first significant role was in the stage production of Oliver, as the Artful Dodger. Collins had learned to play the drums at an early age and decided to pursue a musical career.

In 1970, Phil Collins joined the influential progressive rock band Genesis as the drummer and backing vocalist. Peter Gabriel was the flamboyant frontman. When Gabriel left to start his solo career, Collins took over as lead vocalist and Bill Bruford, formerly of Yes and King Crimson, took over on drums. Genesis would change their style and go on to have hit records in the soft rock genre. They became a trio with Phil, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks, but Collins eventually left to concentrate on his solo career.

The first solo album for Collins, Face Value, was released in 1981. It heralded the start of a very successful solo career with hit singles and albums. His most successful album was the 1985 release No Jacket Required, which featured Sting on backing vocals. His 1989 album, But Seriously featured David Crosby on backing vocals on the anti homeless anthem, Another Day in Paradise.

Phil Collins has had fruitful collaboration with diverse artists. He produced an album for Anni-Frid Lyngstad, better known as Frida, for her solo effort away from Abba. Collins has also produced for Eric Clapton and Philip Bailey. He has played drums on other artists’ records too, such as Robert Plant and Tina Turner. Collins also recorded a duet with Marilyn Martin. He has been involved with composing for films and supplied the title song for Against All Odds, starring Jeff Bridges. The other stars in the film were Rachel Ward, James Woods, and Richard Widmark.

Bob Geldof invited Collins to be a part of the Band Aid record and the Live Aid concert. By hopping on a Concorde flight, he was able to perform in both the London and Philadelphia shows. He was on stage with Sting in London and with Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton in America. Collins also took part in another huge media event in London, to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. He played drums behind Paul McCartney, Ozzy Osbourne and Cliff Richard.

Phil Collins has returned to his first profession of acting on several occasions, most notably in Buster, when he played real life crook, Buster Edwards. It told the story of the Great Train Robbery in England and Julie Walters played his wife. He has also acted in an episode of TV hit, Miami Vice with regulars Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. Steven Spielberg cast Collins in Hook, starring Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Julia Roberts, and Maggie Smith. Collins also supplied his voice for the animated film of Balto. Other characters were voiced by Kevin Bacon, Bob Hoskins, and Bridget Fonda.

Phil Collins has been married three times, his third marriage ending in separation in 2006. He has four children and one adopted daughter from his first marriage. She is Joely Collins, the Canadian actress.
