Phil Hartman
This Canadian-born funny man is best known for his work, especially his numerous impersonations on the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. He also appeared in big-screen films and was an accomplished graphic artist. His tragic and unnecessary death was mourned by his family, Hollywood, and his many fans.
Philip Edward Hartman was born on September 24th, 1948 in Brantford, Ontario. His family moved to the United States when he was still a young child, spending most of their time in Connecticut and California. After studying Graphic Design at California State University, he designed album covers for various bands including Crosby Stills and Nash and filled his spare time working with The Groundlings, a California-based comedy troupe. Hartman and fellow troupe member and friend Paul Reubens created the popular children’s character Pee Wee Herman, with Phil taking on the role of pirate Captin’ Carl in 1986. The same year, he became a cast member of Saturday Night Live, remaining with the show for eight seasons, the longest SNL career at the time. His signature impersonations included those for Frank Sinatra, Barbara Bush, and Bill Clinton, among numerous others. While working on the popular comedy show, Hartman also offered his voice talent for commercials and animated series, including his nine season stint as the voice of Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz on The Simpsons. After leaving SNL in 1994, Hartman was chosen only one year later for NBC’s hit News Radio. He played Bill McNeal, an unlikable radio show host until his death in 1998. The show’s last episode was aired in 1999. Hartman’s movie credits include his leading role in Houseguest, as well as supporting roles in Jingle All The Way, Sgt. Bilko, and his last, Small Soldiers.
During his life, Hartman was married three times. His first marriage was to Gretchen Lewis in 1970, a relationship that ended in divorce. His second marriage to Lisa Strain ended after only three years in 1985. In November of 1987, Hartman married Brynn Hartman. During their marriage, the couple had two children: Edward, born in 1989 and Birgen, born in 1992. The relationship, and Hartman’s life, came to a tragic end in 1998 when Brynn shot Hartman three times while he was sleeping in their California home. After a friend called for assistance, Brynn shot herself, ending her life. Although the reason for the murder-suicide remains a mystery, it was discovered that Brynn had alcohol, cocaine, and Zoloft in her system at the time of their deaths. The couple’s children are currently being cared for by Brynn’s sister and reside in Wisconsin.
