Philip Seymour Hoffman
Philip Seymour Hoffman is known as a very good character actor. He has only recently enjoyed star status, after his remarkable performance in Capote, for which he won the Best Actor Academy Award. In the past, most of his movie careers have been in support of other stars. Hoffman is also respected as a stage actor and theatre director. He was born in Fairport, New York in 1967. Philip’s brother is writer and director, Gordy Hoffman. Philip performed in a High School production of Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller. After graduating from college, he entered rehab for his drug and alcohol addiction, and made a full recovery.
In 1991 Philip Seymour Hoffman was in an episode of the hit TV show, Law & Order with regulars Sam Waterston and Jerry Orbach. Martin Brest cast him in Scent of a Woman, the following year. The film was a critical success and starred Al Pacino and Chris O’Donnell. Hoffman was then picked for the action film, The Getaway, directed by Roger Donaldson and featuring an impressive cast. This included Alec Baldwin, Kim Basinger, Michael Madsen, and James Woods. Hoffman was then seen in a gritty story about alcoholism called When A Man Loves A Woman, starring Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia. Luis Mandoki directed and Ellen Burstyn was also in support.
The movie everyone was talking about in 1997 was Boogie Nights. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the story was set against the porn industry, and Philip Seymour Hoffman was in good company with Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, and William H. Macy. Actors love to be selected by the Coen brothers for their projects and Philip was cast in The Big Lebowski, starring Jeff Bridges and John Goodman. Steve Buscemi also supported. Hoffman played the best friend to Jude Law in The Talented Mr. Ripley, directed by Anthony Minghella. It co-starred Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Hoffman made Almost Famous, the tale of the high school journalist writing for Rolling Stone magazine. Cameron Crowe directed and Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, and Kate Hudson starred. In 2002, Hoffman made a breakthrough and got a lead role in Love Liza. Todd Louiso directed the comic tragedy and Kathy Bates and JD.Walsh supported. Another lead role followed in Owning Mahowny, directed by Richard Kwietniowski. It co-starred Minnie Driver and John Hurt.
The 2003 movie Cold Mountain reunited Philip Seymour Hoffman with director Anthony Minghella, and with Jude Law. The Civil War story co-starred Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellwegger. Afterwards, John Hamburg cast Philip in the romantic comedy, Along Came Polly. Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston starred along with Debra Messing and Hank Azaria. Hoffman was given the part of a lifetime as eccentric writer, Truman Capote in Capote, directed by Bennett Miller. Catherine Keener and Clifton Collins Jr. were in support.
This accolade and recognition afforded to Hoffman after Capote will probably secure his future prospects. His hard work has been rewarded at last. Philip is in a relationship with costume designer Mimi O’Donnell and they have a son together.
