Prince Philip Bio
Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh

Often known to make faux pas during Royal visits and during interviews with the press, this aging member of the British Royal family is also the man who has stood at the side of Queen Elizabeth II through the birth of her four children, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, through the death of Princess Diana and through many trying times during her five decades of sovereignty.

Prince Philip was born into the Greek and Danish royal family on June 10th 1921 and was known as Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark. During 1922 Greece became politically unstable and the royal family were forced, amid a revolution, to abdicate and flee the country taking up residency in Paris. With his parent’s marriage in trouble Philip was sent to England to study and at the age of twelve he went to Germany to continue his education but following the outbreak of World War II he eventually returned to the prestigious Gordonstoun school in Scotland where his education was completed both academically and socially to the highest standard.

On November 20th 1947 Philip became a member of the British Royal family when he married Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey, London. After his honeymoon Philip returned to his
position in the Navy.

Just one year later,on November 14th 1948, the Queen and Prince Philip celebrated the arrival of their first child, a son, Charles Philip Arthur George Mountbatten-Windsor, known as Prince Charles, at Buckingham Palace, London, England. Just two years later the couple welcomed the birth of their only daughter, The Princess Anne, Princess Royal.

In 1952, during a tour of the Commonwealth the Princess' father, King George VI, died, and she ascended the Throne as Queen Elizabeth II. AT this point The Duke’s naval career was over, and he would now take on a new role as the consort of the British monarch. In 1954 the Queen suggested to Winston Churchill that her husband have the title of ‘Prince of the Commonwealth’ but it was later decided, after much debate throughout the Commonwealth, that his title would be

His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

In 1956 Prince Philip established The Duke of Edinburgh Award which was a scheme to encourage young people to work together on projects and to achieve an award at the end that would show their ability. The award scheme is now run throughout more than 100 countries worldwide.

It would be another ten years after the birth of Anne before the couple had their next child,
The Prince Andrew, The Duke of York, who arrived on February 19th 1960 making him the 4th in line to the British throne.

Finally the Royal couple introduced their fourth and final child to the family on March 10th 1964, The Prince Edward. The title, Earl of Wessex, was bestowed on him after his marriage in 1999 to Sophie Rhys-Jones. Edward is currently seventh in line to the throne.

Throughout his time in the public eye, Prince Philip has become synonymous with making insensitive and racist remarks during Royal appointments. These remarks have always been regarded as being a part of the Duke’s sense of humour in the United Kingdom but have on occasions been taken as insults in other parts of the world.

Yet another area that has left Prince Philip open to criticism is the widely believed rumours that Prince Philip’s relationships with his daughter in laws, Sarah Ferguson and Princess Diana were less than amicable. At the hearing to establish the circumstances of Diana’s death, her partner, Dodi’s father, Mohamed Al-Fayed, insinuated that Prince Philip has ordered the death of Diana and Dodi.

Prince Philip remains in good health and as of 2007 is 276th in line to the throne.
