Queen Think of the top selling and performing groups of the latter part of the past millennium and among them, if not the top band would be the British rock band, fronted by Freddie Mercury, ‘Queen’. Queen formed in the 1970’s when Freddie Mercury, at that time known as Farouk Bulsara, met up with drummer Roger Taylor, bassist John Deacon and guitarist Brian May. The band’s name ‘Queen’ was thought up by Freddie due to its visual possibilities, its regal sound and its immediate an universal recognition. With their multi layered arrangement and their lead singer have a vocal scope of four octaves Queen became the most accomplished bands to hit the music scene since The Beatles. The early 1970’s gave Queen moderate success but by the mid seventies they had released albums of unequivocal success such as ‘A Night at the Opera’ and ‘Sheer Heart Attack’. The success of these two albums brought with it international success and the band reach the number one position in charts around the world.
Along with the release of fifteen studio albums they have garnered success with another five live albums and several compilation albums.1975 saw the band starting a world tour wearing designs by 70’s icon Zandra Rhodes and it was during that tour that they changed manager after being left briefly without a manager they signed with Elton John’s manager John Reid. Queen released their album ‘News of the World’ in 1977 which was not well received by the critics but the tracks laid down on the album, such as ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘We are the Champions’ lent themselves brilliantly to the audience participation that Queen so enjoyed when on stage. In true Queen style, always re-inventing their style they released a highly successful single ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ which was performed in the old rockabilly style synonymous with Elvis Presley’s earlier music. The early eighties took Queen to areas of the world that until then had been mainly unvisited by Western bands, such as Sao Paulo, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico.David Bowie collaborated with the band in 1981 on their hit single ‘Under Pressure’ on a purely coincidental basis as Bowie was just visiting the guys in their recording studio when he was invited to participate. The single went to number 1 in Britain. Queen’s first compilation album was released in 1981, ‘Greatest Hits’ which to date remains the UK’s best selling album.During the next few years May and Taylor released solo albums but this didn’t effect the line up of the band who went on to release ‘The Works’ in 1984 with the successful single releases from the album, ‘Radio Ga Ga’ and ‘I want to break Free.’
The next year, Bob Geldof and Midge Ure organized the charity event ‘Live Aid’ at Wembly Stadium in which Queen performed to what has been perceived their best ever performance. In early 1991 rumours abounded regarding Freddie Mercury’s health with speculation that he was suffering from AIDS, which he fervently denied. By November 1991 Mercury released a press statement declaring that he did in fact have AIDS. Within two days of the announcement the band and fans alike were mourning the passing of Freddie. His passing was marked with a tribute concert which saw Elton John, George Michael, Roger Daltrey, Liza Minnelli and David Bowie performing along with the three surviving members of Queen. May and Rogers performed together as Queen on several occasions after the passing of Freddie and inn 2003 they recorded ne songs for the Nelson Mandela’s 4664 campaign against AIDS. After this the remaining members of Queen collaborated with Paul Rodgers and performed under the moniker of Queen + Paul Rogers and toured the USA and Canada. The 2005 issue of The Guinness Book of World Records states that, Queen albums have spent a total of 1,422 weeks or twenty-seven years on the United Kingdom album charts; more time than any other musical act including The Beatles and Elvis Presley and 2007 saw them being voted as the 'Best British Band of All Time.’ ABB |
