Rachel Bilson
Rachel Bilson was born August 25, 1981 in Los Angeles California. Her father is writer, director, and producer Danny Bilson, and her mother is Janice Stango. Her parents were of Jewish American and Italian American ancestry respectively. Also in Bilson’s genes appeared to be the bug for show business, at least paternally. George Bilson, her great-grandfather, led the trailer department at now nonexistent RKO Pictures, and her great-grandmother Hattie was a screenwriter. Additionally, her grandfather Bruce Bilson, was a film director. Bilson’s parents divorced when she was still young, which left her father to remarry actress Heather Medway in 1997. Medway and Bilson’s father have one child named Hattie, who is now Rachel’s half-sister.
Growing up with her dad’s side of the family, Bilson was involved in a head-on collision when she was only fourteen. Driving with a group of friends, Bilson still retains the scar above her right eye, suffers from migraines and even sometimes memory loss. She states that the whole experience taught her a valuable lesson and encouraged her to fly straight. It drove home, in a frighteningly real way, the message that she needed to stop getting into so much trouble. She took that advice and went on to graduate from Walter Reed Middle School and Notre Dame High School (1999).
It was at Notre Dame that Bilson appeared in her first stage productions. She had parts in Bye Bye Birdie, The Crucible and Once Upon a Matress. While many parents dismiss aspirations of acting as impractical, growing up in a show business family, it was actually Bilson’s father who encouraged her to pursue acting professionally. The idea sounded desirable, and she began appearing in commercials and advertisements for everything from Raisin Bran to Pepto-Bismol.
By 2003 Bilson had made her television screen debut. She had a one episode stint on 8 Simple Rules…For Dating My Teenage Daughter opposite screen great John Ritter as well as an appearance on Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan.
2003 was also the year Bilson was inducted into teenage drama stardom. She took the role of Summer Roberts on The O.C. and rode to the top overnight as the show became a phenomenal success. Interestingly, her character was only supposed to be a sparse role. However, she was eventually offered a contract to become a regular when the romance between Summer and Seth became an increasingly integral part of the show’s plot.
Using her newfound fame, Bilson shot a short entitled movie, Unbroken (2003). The project dealt with a woman attempting to reassemble her life the morning after a rape. She also appeared in a less serious capacity on the sketch comedy show Mad TV and the comedy sitcom That ‘70s Show opposite Danny Masterson, Mila Kunis, Topher Grace, and Ashton Kutcher.
Also attributed to Bilson’s newfound fame is her noted appearance on top celebrity lists. For example, Bilson ranked #6 on the Maxim Hot 100 of 2005 and #14 in 2006. Also, at the 2005 Teen Choice Awards, Bilson walked away with Choice Hottie Female, Choice TV Actress in a Drama and co-won with Adam Brody for Best Onscreen TV Chemistry.
Bilson made her film debut in The Last Kiss (2006), a remake of the Italian Gabriele Muccino film L’ultimo Baccio. The film also stars Jacinda Barrett, Casey Affleck, Blythe Danner, and Zach Braff.
Bilson has been dating O.C. co-star Adam Brody for several years, but her publicist denied all rumors that the two were engaged. She recently purchased Rose McGowan’s former home for $1.2 million. Bilson’s passions include fashion, especially designers Stella McCartney and Coco Chanel. She attended the same high school as actress Kirsten Dunst (who was a grade below Bilson) and American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee.
