Rachel McAdams
Rachel MacAdams (simplified to just McAdams for film) was born October 7, 1976 in London, Ontario. McAdams grew up in a nearby city called St. Thomas where her father Lance worked as a truck driver, and her mother Sandy was a nurse. From the age of four, McAdams demonstrated both drive and dedication. She poured her time and energy into figure skating, for which she participated competitively. By the time she was thirteen, she redirected that energy into acting, performing Shakespearean plays at a summer theater camp. McAdams attended York University where she majored in Drama and earned her B.F.A. in theater. She also attended Original Kids Theater Company and David Rothenberg’s on-camera acting class. Some of her fellow students were Scott Speedman, Polly Shannon, and David Sutcliffe.
McAdam’s first acting role was in a Canadian television production called Shotgun Love Dolls (2001). She then appeared in one episode of the televised Disney series The Famous Jett Jackson and one episode in the sci-fi series Earth: Final Conflict. She landed a small part in the 2002 Court TV original film Guilty by Association and a more prominent role in the charming 2002 comedy My Name is Tanino. This same year, McAdams received accolades for her role in the Canadian film Perfect Pie. She was nominated for a Genie Award for Best Supporting Actress—the Genie being a rough Canadian equivalent to the American Oscar.
McAdams made the move to American film with the Rob Schneider comedy The Hot Chick, in which McAdams and Schneider mysteriously change bodies and must find a way to rectify the situation. While the film was not tremendously well-received, it was good exposure for a then little known McAdams.
It was that very exposure that helped McAdams land her breakout role. She starred as queen bee, head of “The Plastics” Regina George in the highly successful Mean Girls (2004). McAdams followed that role with another success The Notebook (also 2004). Based off the Nicholas Sparks novel and co-starring with James Garner, Gena Rowlands, and Ryan Gosling, McAdams had solidified herself as an emerging star in the world of film.
Her next role was as the object of Owen Wilson’s affection in the romantic comedy Wedding Crashers (2005). Also starring Jane Seymour, Vince Vaughn, and Christopher Walken, McAdams had scored another huge commercial hit. Showing her versatility and taking her career in another direction, she next agreed to appear in the Wes Craven thriller Red Eye with Cillian Murphy. Yet another hit, it seemed whatever script McAdams chose was invariably a winner.
McAdams’ next film was no exception. Slipping back into the romantic comedy vein, McAdams complimented an all-star cast in The Family Stone. Acting with Claire Danes, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Diane Keaton, McAdams was nominated for a Satellite Award in the category of Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy. She is currently filming Marriage, a 1940s crime-drama about a man that plans the murder of his wife to spare her the humiliation of a divorce. Tentatively signed on are Pierce Brosnan, Patricia Clarkson, and Chris Cooper.
McAdams is currently dating Ryan Gosling, her on-screen romance from The Notebook. It is rumored the two began dating after sharing a passionate onstage kiss at the MTV Movie Awards while incidentally accepting the award for Best Kiss. Gosling is easily now the envy of every guy, seeing as McAdams was #14 on the Maxim Hot 100 List for 2005 and #17 the following year. She was also voted #1 for MuchMusic’s Who To Do: 20 Sexiest Girls list of 2005.
