Rachel Ward A British born actress with royal connections, who has taken her talents to every corner of the globe, from the UK, to Australia to the United States and found herself in roles opposite some of the world’s most famous men, both in her screen life and in her private life. Rachel Ward was born in the little town of Chipping Norton in the county of Oxfordshire, England, the granddaughter of the 3rd Earl of Dudley. Rachel's sister, Tracy Louise Ward, went on to marry the Marquess of Worcester. Ward attended the Bryan Shaw School of Art one of the leading colleges of art and design in England. After completing her studies she embarked on a modeling career with her 5 feet 9 inch stature and stunning looks it was an inevitable career move for the young Ward and also inevitable that she would be voted one of the top ten most beautiful women in the United States in 1983. During the early 1980's when she appeared in films like ‘Sharkey's Machine’ which was directed by and starred Burt Reynolds, ‘Against All Odds’ along side Jeff Bridges and Swoozie Kurtz and with the title song sung by Phil Collins and in 1982 ‘Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid’, with the star studded cast of Steve Martin, Alan Ladd, Barbara Stanwyck, Ray Milland, Ava Gardner, Burt Lancaster, Cary Grant, Ingrid Burgman, Bette Davis, Lana Turner and Humphrey Bogart.
Her beauty and accomplished acting skills also had Rachel pursed by many admirers among them the son of Robert F Kennedy, David Kennedy whom she briefly dated in the early 1980’s. Rachel once roomed with actress Daryl Hannah during their early days in Hollywood. The mini-series ‘The Thorn Birds’ in 1983 set a fictional sheep station in the Australian outback, was the first screen performance that had Rachel noticed as an accomplished actress when she played opposite Richard Chamberlain, Barbara Stanwyck, Christopher Plummer, Ralph Fiennes and Bryan Brown who she went on to marry in 1984. During casting of ‘The Thorn Birds’ actress Jane Seymour was considered for the role of Maggie Cleary and the role of Mary Carson was originally offered to Audrey Hepburn. After ‘The Thorn Birds’ Rachel took a break from acting to study the skill and reappeared in 1987 opposite her new husband, in ‘The Good Wife’ which also saw her starring with Sam Neill of ‘Jurassic Park’ movie fame. During 1992 Rachel played Spanish Queen Isabella to Tom Selleck's King Ferdinand in the biopic Christopher Columbus: The Discovery. In 2005, she was made a Member of the Order of Australia by Queen Elizabeth II, for service to raising awareness of social justice through lobbying. Married since 1984 Rachel and Bryan have three children, Rose, Matilda and Joe and the family currently reside in Australia just outside of Sydney. Since moving to Australia she has carefully selected acting roles that had significance to her and dedicated herself to perfecting her skills as a screenwriter and director.
2007 saw Rachel appearing in the new ABC television drama "Rain Shadow", a six-part drama series set in the harsh Australian outback, ‘Rain Shadow’ is the story of country veterinarian Kate McDonald, played by Ward, who battles to keep her community afloat in the face of an unrelenting drought. Forced by necessity, Kate hires a new veterinary assistant, Jill, the role played by Victoria Thaine, who is feisty, defiant, and quite the opposite of Kate. ‘Rain Shadow’ also addresses serious topical issues like global warming, and the impact of environmental damage on communities. One of the backdrops to the series is farming in rural Australia and the crucial role that climate plays in the lives of its inhabitants. ABB |
