Ray Romano Bio
Ray Romano

Raymond Romano was born on December 21, 1957 in Queens, New York. His parents are Albert and Lucie Romano. Romano attended school through junior high at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs located in Queens. He then graduated from Hillcrest High School, also in Queens. One of his classmates at Hillcrest was actress Fran Drescher, who starred in The Nanny. Romano appeared as an old classmate on her show.

Before deciding to pursue a career in comedy, Romano began pursuing a career as an accountant. While working at Williamsburg Savings Bank in Queens, New York in 1982, Ray asked out co-worker, Anna Scarpulla. The two married in 1987 and have four children together: Alexandra (born in 1990), Matthew and Gregory (twins, born in 1993), and Joseph Raymond (born in 1998). The couple remains married today and currently reside in Los Angeles.

Romano got his start in comedy by appearing on Comedy Central. The first comedy troupe he joined was called No Talent. He was then hired to play the character of Joe on the sitcom, NewsRadio (1995). Shortly after signing on to the show, he was fired because his brand of comedy did not mix well with what they wanted. Joe Rogan replaced him for the show, but it was cancelled shortly thereafter.

In 1996, Romano landed his own sitcom, Everybody Loves Raymond. This time, the cast and comedy was designed to fit with Romano’s comedy. The show quickly became a hit and lasted for a solid nine seasons. In 2004, Romano became the highest paid television actor when his salary was renegotiated to 50 million dollars per year. The character of Ray Barone was ranked as #10 on TV Guide’s list of the “50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time.” The show also racked up numerous awards during its tenure.

Romano’s character of Ray Barone has many similarities to his real life personality. Romano is an avid golfer and also a big fan of the New York Mets. He incorporated this into the show by making Barone a sports writer and a golfer. His real-life brother is also sergeant for the New York Police Department so Barone’s brother on the show is also a police officer.

Ray helped his close friend, Kevin James, who is also a comedian; launch his career on Everybody Loves Raymond. James then received his own sitcom in 1998, The King of Queens, which was a spin off of Everybody Loves Raymond. Romano has guest starred a couple of times on the show as his character, Ray Barone.

In 2002, Romano launched his voice into the big screen in the animated movie, Ice Age. Romano was the voice of Manfred. Other characters in the movie were voiced by John Leguizamo and Denis Leary. He also starred in the sequel, Ice Age: the Meltdown (2006) with an all-star cast including Queen Latifah and Jay Leno.

Romano acted in three films in 2004, Welcome to Mooseport opposite Gene Hackman, 95 Miles to go, and Eulogy. His latest film, Grilled, came out in 2006 which co-stars his old friend Kevin James along with Burt Reynolds and Juliette Lewis.
