Richard Dreyfuss
This successful screen actor retired from film in 2004 to concentrate on the theatre, which he maintains has always been his first love. A supporter of freedom of speech and the right to privacy, Richard Dreyfuss is a vocal opponent of Bush and his policies. With a well-publicized past drug problem that led to severe memory lapses, as well as two ex-wives, his personal life has also been a target of media scrutiny. Richard Dreyfuss was born on October 29, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of nine, the actor and his family relocated to Los Angeles. Showing his passion for acting at a young age, he debuted in a television production titled Mama’s House when he was only fifteen. A conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, he attended the San Fernando Valley State College for a year, then performed in several stage productions. His first film role was in The Graduate, where he only had a single line, but even this was enough to make Hollywood producers take notice. His one-line role led to more substantial ones in Dillinger and the 1973 film American Graffiti, starring Harrison Ford. Eventually, Dreyfuss secured his first starring and breakthrough role in the Canadian-made The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz. Roles in the Spielberg-directed Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind were next for Dreyfuss. In 1977, he earned the coveted Oscar Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Goodbye Girl. At the time, he was the youngest actor ever to receive the honor, a distinction that would later be held by Adrien Brody. The late 70’s and early 80’s were difficult for the Oscar winner. He failed to appear in any blockbuster hits, was arrested for cocaine possession and entered into rehab. But, after several years, Dreyfuss triumphed. The release of the 1986 Down and Out in Beverly Hills signaled a career resurgence. Since this appearance, he received an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for Mr. Holland’s Opus, and appeared in Postcards From the Edge, What About Bob, starring Bill Murray, and James and the Giant Peach. Most recently, he appeared in Poseidon, despite his retirement from film. Dreyfuss has also continued his stage career, appearing in Sly Fox in 2004 with Bronson Pinchot and Elizabeth Berkley.
Richard’s first marriage occurred in 1983 when he married Jeramie Rain. The couple had daughter Emily and sons Benjamin and Harry Spencer before their divorce in 1995. Janelle Lacey was his second love, but their 1999 marriage ended in divorce as well. In March of 2006, Dreyfuss made his third trip down the aisle, this time with Russian-born Svetlana Erokhin. The couple currently resides in New York. |
