Rob Lowe
Although he is now a distinguished middle-aged actor, it wasn’t too long ago that Rob Lowe was the butt of many jokes, destroying his wholesome image by appearing in not one, but two sex tapes, one of which involved a minor.
Robert “Rob” Lowe was born on March 17, 1964, in Charlottesville, Virginia, although his parents, Charles Lowe and Barbara Hepler, later moved the family to Dayton, Ohio. There the young Lowe began modeling, and by the time he was a teenager, his family, including younger brother Chad, had moved to Los Angeles. Both of the Lowe boys broke into acting.
Lowe first made it big as a teenager in the blended family comedy series, A New Kind of Family, yet it was very short-lived with a runtime of only twelve episodes. After filming a few made-for-television movies, Lowe filmed Francis Ford Coppola’s version of the S.E. Hinton novel, The Outsiders. The cast list read like a who’s who of teenage male actors at the time, with Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Cruise.
Another teenage film followed, although this one had a rather adult theme. Class had Lowe starring along with Jacqueline Bisset as his friend’s mother with whom he has an affair. Lowe followed this with Oxford Blues, starring with Ally Sheedy, and Amanda Pays, as he played a man so obsessed with a woman that he enrolls in Oxford just to be with her. The next movie for Lowe was with several other young actors, and it was around this time they started to be referred to as the Brat Pack. He starred in St. Elmo’s Fire along with Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy. and Mare Winningham.
Breaking away from the pack, in Youngblood, Lowe played the title character, a young hockey player that hopes to get noticed in order to land on a team. He stars alongside Cynthia Gibb and Patrick Swayze . Lowe finally broke away for good as he starred in About Last Night with Demi Moore, (Jim) James Belushi, and Elizabeth Perkins, about a young couple that meet and fall in love, but things happen a little too quickly for them and it threatens their relationship.
Lowe’s squeaky clean reputation took a hit when he was caught during the 1988 Democratic Convention in Atlanta making a sex tape with two women. Problems ensued when it was discovered one of the women was underage, yet later it came out that he had met her in a bar, so he had every reason to believe she was of age. Another sex tape then came into play, this one starring Lowe, a model, and a young male friend, together in a Paris hotel room. This one somehow ended up for sale. Lowe was able to move on and laugh at his mistakes, appearing on Saturday Night Live, and lampooning himself in a skit with Dana Carvey’s Church Lady character.
With his career in a downward spiral, Lowe appeared in a supporting role in a James Spader movie fittingly titled Bad Influence. He followed this with a cameo appearance in the movie Wayne’s World with Dana Carvey and Mike Myers. It was Myers that perhaps gave Lowe his big comeback, as after this he then cast him in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. When Lowe’s part ended up on the cutting room floor, Myers recast him in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Austin Powers in Goldmember.
Along the way, Lowe became a family man, marrying makeup artist Sheryl Berkoff, and together they have two children. He was then cast in what was meant to be the lead character in the television series, West Wing, but alongside such other actors as Martin Sheen, Bradley Whitford, Allison Janey, John Spencer, and Stockard Channing, he was receiving less onscreen time, while the others received more. Lowe left the series after four years to pursue other projects, but within one year’s time, he had two failed television shows under his belt – Lyon’s Den and Dr. Vegas.
