Rob Reiner
Maybe you remember him as “Meathead” from the 1970's sitcom All in the Family or perhaps you best know him as the Hollywood director of films such as A Few Good Men and When Harry Met Sally. Either way, Rob Reiner has had a long and successful career in television and film.
Robert Reiner was born March 6, 1947 in The Bronx, New York. His father, Carl Reiner, was also a notable actor and director. When Rob was in his early teens the family moved to Los Angeles, California where he attended Beverly Hills High School and the University of California, Los Angeles.
Though Rob Reiner began making television appearances, including an episode of Batman as early as 1967, Reiner became a famous face playing the role of Michael Stivic on All in the Family, the most watched television show between 1971 and 1976. In stark contrast to Carroll O’Connor’s lead role as the working class bigot, Archie Bunker, Rob Reiner’s leftwing, liberal “Meathead” created a relationship that explored many social and political issues on prime time television.
Reiner’s interests weren’t just with acting. He co-wrote the first episode of Happy Days, which was also co-directed by Penny Marshall, Reiner’s first wife. Marshall and Reiner also produced, co-wrote and starred in the 1978 television movie More Than Friends, a romantic comedy based on their personal relationship. This particular project may have been a pre-cursor of things to come for Reiner.
Rob Reiner has directed three films listed in the American Film Institute’s Top 100 Love Stories, with the infamous When Harry Met Sally ranking number 25 on the list. Coincidentally, the movie stars long time close friend, Billy Crystal, and Reiner cast his mother as the woman bearing witness to Meg Ryan’s “orgasmic” meal and uttering the famous “I’ll have what she’s having” line. Other notable films produced and directed by Rob Reiner include A Few Good Men and The American President. He most recently directed the romantic comedy Rumor Has It, starring Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Costner.
Rob Reiner is also the founder and co-owner of the production company Castle Rock, which is named after a fictional town from frequent collaborator Stephen King’s work. Reiner also directed the films Stand By Me and Misery, both based on novels by King.
In 1999, Rob Reiner was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame located next to his father’s. Divorced from Penny Marshall in 1979, Rob Reiner is now married to Michelle Singer, with whom he has three children. Actress Tracey Reiner was Penny Marshall’s daughter by her first marriage (who took Rob’s name when they were married). |
