Robbie Williams

A brave move for any successful member of a boy band, but in leaving the famous British group, “Take That, in 1995, Robbie Williams has found nothing but complete success in his own right.

Born on February 13, 1974 in Stoke-on-Trent, England, Williams' early pop career started with the successful pop band “Take That. The band was formed in 1990 and together they had seven number-one hits in the UK while Robbie was in the band.

By 1995, Williams who had been growing frustrated with his life in the band, left amidst rumours of an acrimonious break up due to Robbie’s love of partying and lack of interest in the band.

At that time no one could ever have predicted the great success that lay in store for Robbie Williams. His solo career started in 1996 covering George Michael's "Freedom", reaching number-two in the UK Singles Chart, twenty-six places higher than George Michael's original.

Soon after going solo Robbie collaborated with Australian singer, Kylie Minogue on her single “Kids’, which Robbie later released as a single.

With a long time admiration for Frank Sinatra, Robbie, combined with the success of the track "Have You Met Miss Jones?" which he recorded for the film "Bridget Jones's Diary" which starred Renee Zellwiger, in early 2001, took the chance to duet with Nicole Kidman on the song "Something Stupid", a cover of Frank Sinatra & Nancy Sinatra’s hit. The song became Robbie's fifth number-one hit in the United Kingdom, since leaving Take That.

Robbie gained great success in Argentina, New Zealand, Latvia and scoring top ten placings all over Europe. Williams embarked in a US Promotional Tour but when his first American single, "Millennium" was released, it only made number seventy-two in the Billboard Hot 100. The album "The Ego Has Landed" was released in July 1999 in the United States but unfortunately not achieving the same success that he enjoyed in Europe. The album peaked at number sixty-three in the Billboard Albums Chart. However, Robbie’s fourth album “Swing when you’re Winning” became his biggest international hit, selling over 4 million units worldwide and the video for the song did received attention in the United States, because it featured actress Daryl Hannah as his love interest and eventually peaked inside the top forty in the Billboard Hot 100.

One of the singles taken from the album was "Something Beautiful" and was first offered to Tom Jones but it was then reworked for its inclusion on Williams' album.

In 2002 Williams did a promotional tour in America hoping that big success would follow after performing the lead song "Feel" from his album, “Escapology” on such shows as Good Morning America, with Katie Couric and Matt Lauer and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. However, the song and album failed to catch fire in America, it only sold around 200,000 though "Feel" became a good sized hit just north, in Canada, where Robbie has enjoyed a warmer reception. It spent a massive 54 weeks in the Canadian singles chart.

In total Robbie has sold an estimated 1 million albums in the USA, and around 400,000 in Canada.

In 2005 Williams took home the MTV Europe Music Award for 'Best Male', but also, entered in the The Guinness Book of World Records when he announced his World Tour for 2006, selling 1.6 million tickets in one single day.

After the success of  the re-emergence of “Take That” with the rest of the band, Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald, Robbie had agreed to reunite in Notting Hill, West London, for a preview screening of a documentary about the group.

Just before the screening of the documentary Robbie announced he wasn't coming. The rest of the band were gutted but felt the show had to go on.

According to the UK version of  HELLO Magazine's 2006 Rich list, he earned £30 million in 2006, making him the third biggest earner, only behind Elton John and The Rolling Stones.

Williams is a lifelong supporter of Port Vale F.C., based in his home town of Stoke-on-Trent. In February 2006 he bought £240,000 worth of shares in the club.

Robbie created the charity that is set up in his home town “Give It Sum”. Williams  recently organized a charity football match in an attempt to raise funds for Africa. The match was played in May 2006 at Old Trafford, Manchester United’s ground. The participants were an England team full of legends and celebrities.

During his career he has had romantic relationships with several well-known female celebrities, including Geri Haliwell and Rachel Hunter. He was engaged to former All Saints member Nicole Appleton, who said in her autobiography "Together", that she had aborted his baby during their relationship. Williams' official biography, "Feel", details Williams' many sexual conquests during his European tour in 2003. Williams is also known to have once asked Georgian singer Katie Melua for a date, but she turned him down.

Robbie Williams remains unmarried and is regarded as an extremely eligible batchelor.
