Robert Downey Jr Bio
Robert Downey, Jr.

Robert Downey, Jr. was born on April 4, 1965 in New York City. His mother, Elsie was a singer and dancer while his father, Robert was an underground film director. He has one sister, Alison.

Robert’s parents split up when he was eleven and Robert went to live with his dad in California, who would sometimes find small roles for him in his films. He dropped out of Santa Monica High School at the age of 17 and moved to New York to pursue his career in acting. Before he began landing acting gigs, Robert bused tables and performed “living art” at the underground club, Area.

By the time he was 20 years old he was invited to become a regular cast member on the show, Saturday Night Live. He only stayed for one season before moving on to work on other projects.

Some of his early films include The Pick-up Artist (1987), Less Than Zero (1987) alongside James Spader and Chaplin (1992) co-starring Dan Aykroyd, Marisa Tomei and Anthony Hopkins. His role in Chaplin earned Downey an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Robert is perhaps even better known for his drug addiction than his acting. In 1996 he was arrested for drunk driving, as well as possession of black tar heroin, crack, cocaine and an unloaded gun in the back of his pick up truck. He was sentenced to three years probation. Robert was sent to jail for six months for violating his parole a year later. Less than two years after his release his was sent to prison for a second time due to parole violation. This time he was sentenced to three years. Robert was released in August of 1999.

Since then he has struggled with his drug addiction and has been arrested on several other occasions. Downey claims that he had an early introduction to drugs by his father who offered him marijuana when he was eight years old. He also suffers from bipolar disorder.

Robert began turning his life around in 2000 when he landed a regular spot on the television show, Ally McBeal as Calista Flockhart’s love interest. His role on the show earned him a Golden Globe award and an Emmy nomination.

Robert returned to film after a hiatus in 2005 with three films in that year alone including: Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Good Night, and Good Luck and The Shaggy Dog. For 2006 he beat that with a whopping seven roles.

Downey has also dabbled in the music industry since the early 1980’s when he sang the duet, “Every Breath You Take” with Sting in 1983. He also sang on the Ally McBeal album, “For Once in my Life.” In 2004, he released his debut solo album, “The Futurist.”

In the 1980’s Robert dated and lived with actress Sarah Jessica Parker for seven years. He then married actress Deborah Falconer in 1992 after dating for only 42 days. They have one son together named Indio born on September 7, 1993. In 2004 the couple divorced. While working on the film Gothika (2003), Downey met and married the film’s producer, Susan Levin in 2005. The couple was married in Amagansett, New York.
