Robert Duvall
Robert Duvall is an Academy Award Winning actor and director who has been working in film since his 1962 screen debut as Boo Radley in the film To Kill A Mockingbird, based on the Pulitzer Prize Winning novel by Harper Lee. He has since starred in a plethora of notable roles from the television mini-series Lonesome Dove to The Godfather series.
Robert Selden Duvall was born January 5, 1931 in San Diego, California. His father was a career military man who later became a US Navy admiral and his mother was an amateur actress. Duvall’s acting career started when he began studying drama at Principea College in Illinois. After graduating, Duvall served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955.
After leaving the army, Duvall returned to acting and attended The Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre in New York City where he, along with roommate Dustin Hoffman, studied with Sanford Meisner. Duvall and Hoffman were also acquainted with Gene Hackman, all three of whom were future Hollywood legends.
Duvall’s career began in earnest when Meisner cast him in Horton Foote’s play The Midnight Caller. It was Foote who later recommended Duvall for his debut film role as Boo Radley. Duvall continued working as a stage actor and also landed roles in television and film. He appeared as Ned Pepper, the character John Wayne shot at the end of True Grit, in 1969.
In the 1972 film The Godfather, Francis Ford Coppola, who had previously worked with Duvall in his 1969 film The Rain People, cast Duvall along with Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, and James Caan. Duvall earned his first of six Academy Award nominations for his breakthrough role as Tom Hagen, legal council to the mob.
Since then, Robert Duvall has had a string of steady appearances in film and television. He worked again with Coppola in 1979 in Apocalypse Now, which earned him his second Academy Award Nomination and helped solidify his career as a capable and diverse actor. His most memorable film roles include his Academy Award-winning role of Mac Sledge in Tender Mercies, Harry Hogge in Days of Thunder, and Jerome Facher in A Civil Action. Even at the age of 75, Duvall continues to act, produce, and direct.
Robert Duvall has been married four times, most recently to Luciana Pedraza, who played in the film Operation Tango, which was directed and co-written by and starred Duvall. Duvall owns a rural estate in historic Virginia, where small battles of the Civil War were fought. Ironically, Duvall’s genealogical history can be traced back to Robert E. Lee, who Duvall portrayed in Gods and Generals, which was filmed in part on his estate. |
