Robert Zemeckis
Robert Lee Zemeckis was born on May 14, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois. Zemeckis was raised in the south side of Chicago and began making 8mm films while still in high school.
Following high school, Zemeckis attended Northern Illinois University before transferring to and graduating from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinema-Television. After winning a student Academy Award for his film school project, Field of Honor, Zemeckis decided to pursue working in the movie industry as a career.
Before beginning work on his own Zemeckis attended the Spielberg School of Genre Filmmaking. This entailed Zemeckis to direct several small projects that Steven Spielberg produced. Once he felt confident in his skills as a filmmaker, the future filmmaker began working solo.
On his way to success Zemeckis directed a few films that turned out to be duds at the box office. His first big commercial success was directing Romancing the Stone, which starred Michael Douglas. Following his success with that film, Zemeckis directed the Back to the Future trilogy starring Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd. These films put Zemeckis on the map as one of the leading directors in Hollywood.
Other films Zemeckis has worked on include Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and Forrest Gump (1994), both films showcase Robert’s imaginative use of special effects. Zemeckis won an Academy Award for Best Directing for the film Forrest Gump in 1994. He has also recently completed the animated film The Polar Express (2004) with Tom Hanks as one of the lead voices. Throughout many of his films, Zemeckis works with composer Alan Silvestri and writer Bob Gale, whom he met at the USC film school. Robert likes to use a core group of actors in the majority of his films including Michael J Fox, Tom Hanks, Kathleen Turner, and Crispin Glover.
At one point Zemeckis was married to actress Mary Ellen Trainor who he had worked with before. Together, they had one child, Alexander, before divorcing. On December 4, 2001 Zemeckis married again.
In 1991, Zemeckis found himself on the other side of the camera when he made his TV acting debut in Parker Lewis Can’t Lose, which co-starred his wife at the time, Mary Ellen Trainor.
Zemeckis continues to support budding filmmakers and his alma mater, USC. In 1999 he donated $5 million to go towards the Robert Zemeckis Center for Digital Arts at USC. The center hosts many film school classes today. He has also made donations to the Interactive Media Division and USC’s student television station, Trojan Vision. |
