Robin Gibb Bio

Robin Gibb

Although best recognized as one of the three Bee Gees, Robin is in his own right a predominant singer/song writer himself and still makes appearances along side other stars in his charity work.

Born on December 22nd 1949 in Douglas, on The Isle of Man, a small island located in the Irish Sea at the geographical centre of the British Isles who’s Head of State is Queen Elizabeth II. Robin was the twin brother of Maurice Gibb and younger brother of Barry Gibb.

Robin’s parents, Hugh and Barbara, were English and the children were raised in Manchester. Soon after the birth of their youngest son Andy Gibb they moved the family to Australia. They settled into life in Australia and went to Humpybong State School where their musical careers began. Their musical talents flourished and the trio were soon spotted by Robert Stigwood, who was, coincidently an Australian who had relocated to England and as a music producer.

Once the Bee Gees became stars it was accepted that Robin was the lead singer in the group but when his place was taken by Barry Gibb, Robin decided to leave the two other brothers and seek a solo career.

Initially Robin’s sols career was successful with his first hit single being “Saved by the Bell’ but his album ‘Robin’s Reign’ was not as successful and realizing that a sols career was not as easy as he had expected, Robin returned to perform with his brothers once again.

In 1968 Robin married Molly Hullis, a secretary in Robert Stigwood's organisation. They had two children, Spencer and Melissa, but they eventually divorced in 1980 after years of living separate lives, with Robin almost permanently in the USA and Molly remaining in the UK.

After they began performing together once again, there was still evidence of a rift between the brothers but after moving to Los Angeles to record ‘Blue Eyed Soul’ it became obvious that the rift had been solved and so the trio went on to their second period of phenomenal success with the advent of the disco era in the late 1970’s. The Bee Gees were the singer songwriters for several of the hits from the movie ‘Saturday Night Fever’ starring John Travolta, Karen Lynn Gorney and Fran Drescher.

While continuing in the group, Robin also promoted his solo career, and during the 1980s he released three further solo albums How Old Are You, Secret Agent, and Walls Have Eyes, which were more successful in  Europe than in the UK or USA. However, his 1984 single "Boys Do Fall in Love" did reach the Billboard top 40.

Robin remarried in 1985 to an artist, Dwina Murphy,  and they have a son, Robin John. Dwina was described as a 'bisexual druid' by the tabloid press in 2006, on the occasion of Tony Blair's stay at their house in Florida. Robin was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2002 New Year's Honours List, along with his brothers Maurice and Barry. The official presentation ceremony at Buckingham Palace was performed by Queen Elizabeth II but was delayed for a few days due to the death of Maurice.

In the same month as Robin released his fourth solo album, in January 2002, after returning to the group, his twin brother Maurice died of a heart attack. With Maurice's death, his two surviving brothers Robin and Barry announced that they would no longer perform as the Bee Gees. Following the devastating Asian tsunami in December 2004, Robin and Barry banded together with several other artists, Boy George, Steve Winwood, Jon Anderson, Rick Wakeman, Sir Cliff Richard, Bill Wyman, America, Kenny Jones, Chicago, Brian Wilson, Russell Watson and Davy Spillane, to record a charity single to raise aid for the victims.

In May 2006, Robin took part in the Prince's Trust, a trust founded by Prince Charles, 30th Birthday Concert at the Tower of London along with his brother Barry. They sang 3 songs: "Jive Talkin", "To Love Somebody" and "You Should be Dancing".Also in 2006, ex-Atomic Kitten singer Liz McClarnon reached number five on the UK singles chart with her cover of "Woman in Love," which was co-produced by Robin. This was a former number one hit Robin and his brother Barry originally wrote for Barbra Streisand in 1980.

Robin Gibb will mark his return to his birthplace by playing a concert at the Isle of Man TT festival in 2007. The TT festival takes place at the end of May and beginning of June. Star acts such as The Who, Ronan Keating, Madness and The Stranglers have all been confirmed for the event. Gibb is currently living in Thame, Oxfordshire, England, but announced that he was in the process of buying a house on the outskirts of Peel, Isle of Man.
