Robin Givens
Robin Givens was born in New York City on November 27, 1964 to Ruth Roper. Her birth father, Reuben Givens abandoned the family when Robin was young. After that, she rarely saw him. She has one sister, Stephanie Givens. Her mother raised them in Westchester, Connecticut. By the age of ten, Givens began taking acting classes at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, New York.
Following high school, Robin attended Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. One of her classmates at Sarah Lawrence was Holly Robinson Peete. She was then accepted into the graduate school of arts and sciences at Harvard University in 1984.
In the early 1980’s Givens worked as a model New York under the Ford Modeling Agency posing for magazines such as Seventeen and Mademoiselle. She made her film debut in the 1981 flick, Fort Apache, the Bronx. In 1985, Bill Cosby talked Givens into dropping out of medical school to pursue acting.
She got her start in the world of acting by making appearances on several soap operas such as Guiding Light and Loving. Robin then earned a starring role on the television series, Head of the Class which aired on ABC from 1986 to 1991.
Robin’s first major role in a TV movie was Beverly Hills Madam (1986). Her first major role in a feature film was A Rage in Harlem (1991). In 1994, Robin posed nude for Playboy magazine in the September issue.
Most recently, Givens starred in the UPN television series, Sparks (1996-1998) playing a lawyer. She also briefly landed the role of replacement host on the short lived TV series, Forgive and Forget before it was cancelled. In 2006, Givens is setting out to conquer Broadway after being cast as Roxie Hart in Chicago. She is also in the process of writing her autobiography.
From 1988-1989, Givens was married to boxer Mike Tyson. In 1989, Givens briefly dated actor Brad Pitt. She has also been linked with her Head of the Class co-star Brian Robbins, Howard Stern, and pro-basketball player, Jason Kidd. In 1997 Robin married professional tennis player as well as her own personal tennis instructor, Svetozar Marinkovic, although they had been separated since their wedding day. They divorced by December of 1997.
Givens is currently in a relationship with Murphy Jensen, also a professional tennis player, after the couple began dating in 1998. Robin has one son with Jensen named Will, born in 1999. She has a second son, Michael, who was born in 1992 in a previous relationship. |
