Robin Williams Bio
Robin Williams

Robin Williams was born on July 21, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois. His father was an auto executive while his mother was a homemaker. Williams grew up in a privileged lifestyle in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan until his family relocated to Marin County, California in 1967. He attended Redwood High School while living in California and Detroit Country Day School when living in Michigan.

Following high school, Williams attended Claremont Men’s College where he discovered the theater. He then decided to drop out and began studying drama at Juilliard. Robin remained in New York City for three years before deciding to move back to San Francisco to pursue a career as a stand up comedian.

Williams got his first career break when he auditioned and began working at the Improv in 1976. His first television gig was as a member of the show Laugh-In (1977-1978). The role that really contributed to his growing celebrity status however, was when he made a guest appearance on the sitcom Happy Days as the character Mork. His character was such a hit on the show that producers at NBC decided to create a spin-off series called Mork and Mindy (1978). Actress Pam Dawber was cast as Mindy.

Robin quickly turned his efforts toward film and made his debut on Popeye (1980). The film was a disappointment successfully, but Robin quickly came back with a couple unforgettable performances in The World According to Garp (1982) and Moscow on the Hudson (1984). Throughout this time he also performed in comedy clubs across the country.

Williams earned his first Oscar Nomination for Best Actor for the film Good Morning, Vietnam (1987). At the same time people began to doubt whether he would be able to handle dramatic performances. He proved to everyone that he could take on serious roles when he starred in Dead Poets Society (1989) which earned him another Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Since 1986, Williams, along with Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal have hosted the show Comic Relief on HBO. The goal of the show is to raise funds to help the homeless.

In 1978, Williams married Valerie Velardi. The couple has one child together, Zachary, born in 1983. Velardi then hired Marsha Garces as their nanny. Williams ended up having an affair and falling in love with Garces, causing him to get divorced from Velardi in 1988.

By 1989, Williams married Garces. They have two children together, Zelda Ray born in 1989 and Cody Allen born in 1992. Today the family lives in an upper-class neighborhood of San Francisco. Garces and Williams has also teamed up together to form Blue Wolf Productions, which was responsible for producing Mrs. Doubtfire (1993).

Together, Robin and Marsha have also made many charitable efforts. They founded the Windfall Foundation whose goal is to raise money for many different charities. He also donated blood many times following the September 11 attacks. Since the start of the Iraq War, Williams has also performed several times for the American troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Williams is also a huge fan of the Tour de France and has become a close friend to seven-time Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong.

Throughout much of the 1970s and 1980s, Williams was addicted to cocaine. He was prompted to seek treatment following the birth of his first son and the death of his good friend and fellow partier, John Belushi. In August of 2006, Williams once again admitted himself into a rehabilitation center to treat alcoholism, following 20 years of sobriety.

Robin’s most recent films include Robots (2005), The Big White (2005), RV (2006), Man of the Year (2006), and Mrs. Doubtfire 2 (2007).
