Robin Wright Penn Bio

Robin Wright Penn Biography

American actress Robin Wright Penn may not be on Hollywood’s A-list of leading ladies, but she has carved out a reputation for herself as being an actress who goes against the grain of the Hollywood system. She’s been quoted as saying, “Famous is celebrityism and I don't want that. I know that I'm not that. Everybody knows who you are, I can't imagine living that life.”

Wright Penn is best known for the parts she’s played in films like The Princess Bride in 1987, The Playboys in 1992, and Forrest Gump in 1994. She’s also known for the major movies roles in Jurassic Park, Batman Forever, and Sabrina; as well as the part of Maid Marian in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, which she rejected.

The actress was born as Robin Virginia Gayle Wright in Dallas, Texas, on April 8, 1966. Her parents, Freddie Gayle Wright, a pharmaceutical executive, and Gayle Gaston, an Independent Executive National Sales Director for Mary Kay, later moved her to San Diego, California, where she grew up. Wright Penn began working in the public eye as a model out of Paris and Tokyo when she was fourteen.

After high school she decided to pursue acting as a profession and landed the role of Kelly Capwell in the NBC soap opera Santa Barbara in 1984. She remained with the series until 1988, and received three Daytime Emmy nominations for her acting skills in the show.

While still under contract with Santa Barbara, Wright Penn landed the title role of Buttercup in the major box-office hit The Princess Bride. In order to take a temporary break from her role in the soap opera in order to film the movie, Wright Penn had to add another nine months to her contract with the series.

Although The Princess Bride is often credited with being Wright Penn’s debut into the big screen, she had actually made her debut one year earlier with the role of Lori Stanton in 1986’s Hollywood Vice Squad. In 1986 she also married actor Dane Witherspoon, whom she divorced two years later.

In 1988 Wright Penn landed the role of Lucrezia in the 1989 television miniseries A TV Dante and she followed this up with the starring role in Denial in 1990, alongside Jason Patric.  The pair became romantically involved until she met Sean Penn on the set of her next film, State of Grace, later that same year.

On April 13, 1991, Wright Penn had her first child with Penn; a daughter named Dylan Francis. Around the this time she was also offered the role of Maid Marian in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves in 1991, starring Kevin Costner, but she backed out of the part once she found out she was pregnant.

In 1992 she returned to the big screen with the role of Tara Maguire in The Playboys. Her performance as Maguire has been considered one of the best performances of her career. The same year she was seen next to Robin Williams in the comedyToys.

In 1993 Wright Penn was offered the role of Abby McDeere in 1993’s The Firm but bowed out after becoming pregnant once again with her second child. Her son, Hopper Jack Penn, was born on August 6, 1993.

The following year she starred as Jenny Curran opposite Tom Hanks in the Oscar-winning movie Forrest Gump. Wright Penn earned her first Golden Globe nomination for her performance as Gump’s lifelong love interest, as well as a Screen Actors Guild nod for Best Supporting Actress.

Since then she has appeared in numerous movies including Moll Flanders, She’s So Lovely, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Message in a Bottle, Unbreakable, and White Oleander.

On December 21st 2007, Robin filed for divorce from husband Sean citing irreconsilable differences as the reason. It would have been Sean's second divorce, his first was from pop icon Madonna in 1989 and after an eleven year marriage to Robin, he was about to find himself a single man once again.

But in 2008 the couple made an attempt at a reconciliation. But once again, citing irreconsilable differences, the couple parted company once again and filed fro divorce in April 2009.
