Whatever it is that Rosanna Arquette has, she has it in spades. The earthy, natural, beauty is an actress, writer and director who has inspired two hit songs. Most people already know that the 1982 Grammy winning song, Rosanna, by Toto was written about her. It’s not as well known that Peter Gabriel’s song In Your Eyes was also written about Rosanna Arquette.
Rosanna Lauren Arquette was born on August 10, 1959 in New York City to Lewis and Mardi Arquette. She is the oldest of five show-biz siblings. Her brother Richmond is a writer and actor; her sister Patricia is an actress and star of the current television show Medium; her brother, the transgendered Alexis who lives life as a woman now, was recently featured on The Surreal Life; and her youngest brother David is the star of several films including the Scream Trilogy and is married to actress Courteney Cox.
When Rosanna Arquette was 11 years old, her parents moved the family to an artist’s commune in Virginia, but she didn’t stay long. At age 14 she hitchhiked from Virginia to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams of being an actress. Her first roles were appearances on TV shows like Eight is Enough and bit parts in movies such as American Graffiti. Her first big role and an Emmy nomination came in the made-for-TV movie The Executioner’s Song opposite Tommy Lee Jones.
Starring roles in feature films followed for Arquette, including Baby It’s You (1983) and The Aviator (1985) with Christopher Reeve, and Silverado (1985) opposite Kevin Costner and Kevin Kline. In Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) she played a bored housewife who is fascinated by the personal ads and becomes intertwined in the life of Susan (played by Madonna). It was Desperately Seeking Susan that really gained Rosanna popularity.
During her early career Rosanna Arquette was married to director/composer Tony Greco. The two married when she was 19 but were divorced by 1980. In 1986 she married James Newton Howard, but that marriage lasted only a year. She then moved to England to reunite with an old boyfriend, Peter Gabriel and her American film career took a hiatus for four years. In 1993 Rosanna married restaurateur Jon Sidel, and the two had a child named Zoe Blue Sidel in 1994. Unfortunately, her third marriage did not last either.
Since her hey days in the 1980’s, Rosanna Arquette has continued to work steadily in films, choosing mostly offbeat, independent movies. She has appeared in a few mainstream films such as Pulp Fiction (1994) and The Whole 9 Yards (2000). In 2002 she branched out into writing, producing and directing with the documentary Searching for Debra Winger. The film features an all star female cast who discuss the pressures that they face being female in the entertainment industry.
In 2006 Rosanna Arquette began starring in the TV show What About Brian which has been renewed for the 2006/2007 season. |
