Rosario Dawson
Rosario Dawson was born on May 9, 1979 in New York City. She is a mix of Native American, Irish, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and African descent. Her mother was a professional violinist and her father was a construction worker. She has one younger brother named Clay. Rosario went to an alternative high school in Manhattan and had dreams of becoming a marine biologist.
One day, when she was sitting on her front porch, filmmaker Larry Clark passed by. He asked if she wanted to be in a movie; Rosario agreed. That was how she landed the role of Ruby in the film Kids (1995), which earned critical success. The film starred a cast of up and coming actors; most had not yet been discovered such as Chloe Sevigny, Leo Fitzpatrick, and Justin Pierce.
Following her experience on the set of Kids, Dawson decided to pursue acting as a career. She began attending Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute which has taught other successful actors such as Angelina Jolie. Since her debut on film, Dawson has worked on a variety of film projects ranging from low budget independent films to very successful blockbusters.
Some of the more popular films Rosario has starred in include Men in Black II (2002) co-starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, Josie and the Pussycats (2001) co-starring Tara Reid, Rachael Leigh Cook, and Alan Cumming, and The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002) co-starring Eddie Murphy and Randy Quaid.
Most recently, Dawson has starred in the big budget picture, Sin City (2005) with an all star cast including Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Britney Murphy, Jamie King, Jessica Alba, Elijah Wood, Alexis Bledel, and Clive Owen. She will also star in the sequel. Dawson’s latest film, Clerks II, came out in July of 2006. The sequel was written, produced and directed by Kevin Smith. She also recently completed the film version of the famous play, Rent (2005). Her salary for the film was $1 million
Dawson is currently in a relationship with the Sex and the City star, Jason Lewis. They share a home together in Los Angeles, California.
Rosario has proven that she is a well rounded, business minded person embodying the entire entertainment industry. She owns her own production company called Trybe and also co-created her own comic book called Occult Crimes Taskforce.
In 2004 Dawson founded the organization, Voto Latino, which encourages American Latinos to participate in civic government. She also organized the first American Latino celebrity voter registration drive.
