Rose McGowan
Alabaster actress Rose McGowan was born on September 5, 1973, in Florence, Italy; to Irish artist, Daniel McGowan, and French American writer, Terri. The McGowan family were members of the Children of God commune, and Daniel McGowan ran its Italian chapter. Hollywood’s Phoenix family, including River Phoenix and Joaquin Phoenix were also members of Children of God. With her striking looks, McGowan became a child model, posing for Vogue Bambini and various other Italian magazines. At age nine, McGowan ran away from home in an attempt to escape the Children of God. One year later, her parents divorced, and she moved to Oregon and Gig Harbor, Washington, where she learned to speak English. McGowan attended high school in Seattle at Roosevelt High. At age fifteen, she obtained legal emancipation from her parents, and went on to pursue a career in the film industry, as well as enrolling in beauty school as a back-up career. In 1992, nineteen-year-old McGowan landed a bit-role in the Pauly Shore comedy Encino Man. Three years later, her performance in the black comedy, The Doom Generation got her noticed by critics, and led to a nomination for Best Debut Performance at the 1996 Independent Spirit Awards. In 1996, McGowan was cast as best friend to Neve Campbell's character Sidney in Wes Craven’s hit horror trilogy, Scream.
The late-90s saw McGowan acting in mostly low-budget films, such as 1998's Southie, Going All the Way in 1997, and Lewis & Clark & George also in 1997. In 1999, she earned a nomination for Best Villain at the MTV Movie Awards for her performance in Jawbreaker, about a high school student who attempts to cover up a murder. McGowan also juggled modeling along with acting in the late 90s, as the face of clothing company Bebe. She graced the covers of several magazines, including Seventeen, Interview, Maxim, and GQ. With her porcelain complexion and killer curves, McGowan has been featured on the sexiest women lists for men's magazines such as Maxim, FHM, and Stuff. The new millennium saw McGowan landing the role of Paige Matthews on the Aaron Spelling series, Charmed. Brought in to replace Shannen Doherty, McGowan starred alongside Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano from 2001 until the series ended in 2006. McGowan was also chosen to produce the show after the seventh season, but turned down the offer. In 2005, McGowan was cast as actress and singer Ann-Margret in the CBS mini-series, Elvis. Also in 2005, McGowan joined a growing list of celebs who are lending their voices to video games, as the femme fatale, Tala, in the PlayStation 2 and Xbox game Darkwatch. In 2006, McGowan appeared in the Brian de Palma film The Black Dahlia, alongside Josh Hartnett, Aaron Eckhart, Scarlett Johansson, and Hilary Swank. She also stars in the upcoming Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez film Grind House, slated for release in April 2007.
In 1997, McGowan met and began dating shock-rocker Marilyn Manson. The pair became a high-profile couple in Hollywood, standing out among the blonde and tan crowd with their gothic rock looks. In February of 1999, McGowan announced on Howard Stern that the couple were engaged; however, by January 2001, they had called it quits. McGowan has since been involved with actor Kip Pardue, Ahmet Zappa, and magazine editor, David Zinczenko. In her spare time, McGowan enjoys knitting, baking, gardening, and collecting Marlene Dietrich memorabilia. She also loves spending time with her Boston terriers, Bug and Fester, and has lent her support to other animals through the organization Rescue Net. YUDDY |
