Rosie Odonnell Bio
Rosie ODonnell

Rosie ODonnell was born on March 21, 1962 in Bayside, Queens, New York. Her father, Edward J. ODonnell was an immigrant from Belfast. Her mother, Roseann Murtha died of breast cancer at the young age of 38.

After graduating high school ODonnell attended Dickenson College for a short period. She then transferred to Boston University, but never completed her degree there either. Instead, she chose to begin working as a stand up comedienne along the east coast.

Rosie, with her tomboyish appearance, was unique from other female actresses and comediennes. Her first television sitcom was Stand by your Man (1992). The show was quickly cancelled due to poor ratings.

Rosie took her stand up act to the big screen in the early 1990’s with a slew of comedic films including A League of Their Own (1992) co-starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, and Madonna. She also starred in Another Stakeout (1993) alongside Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez, as well as Sleepless in Seattle (1993) with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

By the mid-1990’s, ODonnell’s career began to stall after she starred in several films that performed poorly, including Car 54, Where are You? (1994). She then starred in Exit to Eden in 1995 which was adapted from an Anne Rice Novel.

ODonnell then began hosting her own talk show in 1996 called The Rosie ODonnell Show. The show was hugely successful and allowed ODonnell to showcase various charity projects she was a part of. The show also featured interviews with celebrities and interaction with audience members. Rosie’s talk show earned her several Emmy awards while on the air, but she abandoned the program in 2002.

By 2000, Rosie expanded on what she had begun with her talk show and came out with her own magazine called Rosie’s McCall’s. The magazine featured substantive articles on topics like depression, breast cancer, and other important issues to Rosie. The magazine did not have photographs of thin models in high fashion and instead chose real women to grace the pages. The magazine did not last, reportedly in part due to the fact that it was difficult to find advertisers.

When Rosie decided to leave the magazine in 2003, the publishers sued Rosie for breech of contract, claiming that the magazine was a failure because ODonnell was uncooperative and violent at times. Eventually the judge dismissed the case.

In 2002, Rosie came out of the closet and publicly admitted that she was a lesbian. She stated that one of her reasons for publicly coming out was because some adoption agencies in Florida, as well as other states, were refusing to let gay parents adopt children.

After leaving her show and coming out to the world, Rosie returned to her stand up routine, which was known for being political and abrasive. She also made fun of a variety of celebrities including Michael Jackson, Joan Rivers, Oprah Winfrey, and Diana Ross

ODonnell officially entered into a legal union with her long-tome partner, Kelli Carpenter on February 26, 2004 in San Francisco. Together, the couple has adopted four children together, named Parker Jaren (born in 1995), Chelsea Belle (born in 1997), Blake Christopher (born in 1999), and Vivienne Rose (born in 2002). Rosie is also a foster mother to Mia, a 3-year-old.

In 2004, ODonnell and Carpenter opened their own travel company specifically geared towards gay and lesbian families. The company is called R. Family Vacations. They have even launched their own cruise ship that travels between New York and the Bahamas.

After just one year as a co-host on ABC's wildly popular The View alongside Barbara Walters, Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Rosie announced her intension to leave the show in June 2007.

Her ongoing feud with Donald Trump, which never seems to end, has been sited as a reason for her leaving, along with her outburst on her theories of what really happened to The World Trade Center in the September 11th 2001 attacks.
