Rupert Everett
Rupert James Hector Everett was born on May 29, 1959 in Norfolk, England to Major Anthony Michael Everett and Sarah MacLean. Everett began his education at Farleigh House preparatory school. He later attended Ampleforth College and was educated by monks, where he was taught the classical piano.
Rupert ran away to London when he was 15 years old with the hopes of making it as an actor. He enrolled at the Central School of Speech and Drama but was later kicked out. To make ends meet he worked as a male prostitute, also known as a “rent boy.” Everett then fled to Scotland where he found work at the avant-garde Citizens’ Theatre.
Slowly, Everett began to break into plays and earned his first starring role in 1982 for a production of Another Country. He then starred in the film version of Another Country in 1984 alongside Colin Firth, and became a hot young British actor. Everett then began to build a career as a film actor but after Hearts of Fire (1987) flopped, his prospects dried up.
Everett moved to Paris in 1989 and wrote a novel called Hello, Darling, Are Your Working? During this time in Paris he also came out of the closet and revealed that he is gay. Rupert’s next film was The Comfort of Strangers (1990) co-starring Christopher Walken. This opened the door for several other films, none of which were widely successful. He also came out with a second novel in 1995 called The Hairdresser of St. Tropez.
Everett also spent some time in Milan, Italy working as a model. He remains fluent in Italian, as well as English and French. His fashion sense earned him a VH1 Vogue Fashion Award for most fashionable male celebrity in 1999.
Everett’s career hit the big time when he starred in My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) with Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, and Dermot Mulroney. This was followed by The Next Best Thing (1999) opposite Madonna. In both films he played the gay best friend. For The Next Best Thing, Rupert suggested to Madonna that she do a cover of the popular song, American Pie. She did, and Everett sang back up and also appeared in her music video. Today he works as a contributing editor for Vanity Fair magazine and has also continued to star in successful films.
Other films Everett has been a part of include Shakespeare in Love (1998) co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Judy Dench; An Ideal Husband (1999), co-starring Cate Blanchett, Minnie Driver, and Julianne Moore; and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1999) co-starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Calista Flockhart, Kevin Kline, and Christian Bale.
He also starred in the film Unconditional Love (2002) which features an all-star cast and many cameo appearances. Some co-stars included Kathy Bates, Julie Andrews, and Barry Manilow. For his role in the film, Everett made a reported $4 million. |
