Rush Limbaugh Bio
Rush Limbaugh

Will America’s real anchorman please stand up?

Well, he’s already standing, as top radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh proclaimed himself “America’s Real Anchorman” after the passing and moving on of the 1990s’ top network news anchors Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, and Peter Jennings.

Rush is known for his conservative views and politics and commanding voice and radio personality. If you listen to AM talk radio, then you are likely familiar with Rush Limbaugh, born as Rush Hudson Limbaugh III in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on January 12, 1951.

He has been most involved with his own radio program, The Rush Limbaugh Show, which many claim was a catalyst in helping to revive and transform the dying AM broadcasting after FM was introduced and quickly seemed to “take over” AM radio. Rush’s popular radio show was launched in 1988, and since then, many conservative talk radio stations and programs have emerged, rebuilding the strength of AM radio.

The Rush Limbaugh Show, focuses on conservative views of politics, current events, and world affairs, is also famous for its high ratings, and for having the highest number of listeners of all radio talk shows in the U.S. In 2005, the show received a weekly average of 13.5 million listeners, and his audience has the highest percentage of hard news consumers compared to all other radio and T.V. programs in the U.S.

His radio career began when Rush was only a teenager in the late 1960s, and he was known as “Rusty Sharpe.” After high school he went to Southeast Missouri State University for only one year, where he interestingly failed a speech class. After college he worked successfully at several radio jobs until he was noticed in the mid to late-1980s by Edward F. McLaughlin, then-president of ABC Radio, and Rush ended up working on WABC-AM in a two-hour local program, sandwiched between comedian Joy Behar’s program and Lynn Samuels’, who each also had their own two-hour slot.

Rush has a nice little handful of achievements under his belt. For example, in 1993, he was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. He also was honored with the Marconi Radio Award for the National Association of Broadcasters’ “Syndicated Radio Personality of the Year” in 1992, 1995, and 2000, as well as 2005. Rush was also ranked as the greatest radio talk show host in history by Talkers magazine in 2002.

Rush is also well-known for his hearing problems, and for undergoing hearing surgery, and for his admitted prescription drug abuse and addictions.

Finally, Rush is famous for being involved in various controversies regarding statements he made on the air. The first major controversy he was a part of focused on the ESPN, and in particular the Sunday NFL Countdown and NFL football player Donovan McNabb, and also involved Reverend Al Sharpton, Democrats Howard Dean and Wesley Clark, and Sunday NFL Countdown co-host Tom Jackson.

Rush’s second major controversy surrounded a comment he made regarding Michael J Fox’s medical condition.

Rush, currently single and unattached, has no children but has been married three times. First, he was married from 1977 to 1980 to Roxy Maxine McNeely; second, to Michelle Sixta from 1990 to 1994; and finally, to Marta Fitzgerald, with whom he was wed by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in the justice’s home, from 1994 until 2004.
