Russell Crowe Bio
Russell Crowe

Russell Ira Crowe was born in Wellington, New Zealand on April 7, 1964. He is of British, Norwegian and Maori descent. At the age of four, he moved with his family to Australia where his parents were pursuing a career in film set catering.

At the age of 14, his family moved back to New Zealand where he attended Auckland Grammar School. Instead of continuing his education, Crowe left school to help his family out financially.

By the mid-1980’s Crowe began developing his musical talents and came up with the stage name “Russ Le Roq.” He sang lead vocals and played the guitar in several local bands and had mild success with the New Zealand single, “I Wanna be Marlon Brando.”

At the age of 21, Crowe thought about attending the National Institute of Dramatic Art, but was told it would be a waste of his time and only teach him bad habits. Instead, he slowly began making his way into television on his own. Some of the early TV shows he appeared on include: Neighbours, Living with the Law and The Late Show. By 1990, he made his first appearance on film in The Crossing.

After receiving some success in Australian films, Crowe quickly moved to Hollywood and began landing work in American films. Soon after, he became a huge success with films like Gladiator (2001), which earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor, as well as an Oscar nomination. Crowe has won two other Oscar nominations for his roles in The Insider (1999) opposite Al Pacino and for A Beautiful Mind (1998) opposite Jennifer Connelly.

On his 39th birthday in 2003, Crowe married Australian singer and actress, Danielle Spencer, whom he met on the set of The Crossing (1990). In the past he has been linked with actress Meg Ryan, Peta Wilson and Courtney Love. Today, Spencer and Crowe have two sons: Charles (born in 2003) and Tennyson (born in 2006). Throughout most of the year the family resides in Australia.

Other than acting, Crowe is also a huge fan of rugby. In 2006, he purchased 75% of the South Sydney Rabbitohs National Rugby League club for approximately $3 million (AUD) and received four out of eight seats on the board of directors. In 2005 his team also became the first club team in Australia to be sponsored by a film when they advertised Crowe’s film, Cinderella Man on their jerseys. He maintains friendships with many of the former and current team members and employees. Crowe has also convinced some of his actor friends like Tom Cruise and Burt Reynolds to support the club.

Crowe also continues to pursue his musical ambitions. In 2005, he released the single “Raewyn” that went along with the album My Hand, My Heart which was released onto iTunes. The album contained a tribute to actor Richard Harris, whom Crowe befriended on the set of Gladiator. He established a new band called The Ordinary Fear of God and performed his first single in 2006 on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
