The super sexy and ever-talented Ryan Gosling has won the hearts of many with his numerous versatile and powerful roles on the big screen over the last decade, particularly on Remember the Titans, Murder by Numbers, The Notebook, and Half Nelson.
Gosling is a Canadian actor hailing from London, Ontario, where he was born on November 12, 1980, into a very religious Mormon family, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, even though Gosling considers himself religious (but non-denominational) today, as a child he often got into trouble and fights at school, causing his mother to quit her job to home school him. He was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and had to take the standard treatment at the time, Ritalin.
Gosling was chosen to join the Mickey Mouse Club in 1993 alongside Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake, among others. He reportedly created a bit of a stir after talking to Spears and Aguilera about sex and different sex positions.
Before making it big in the film industry, Gosling was seen on a number of lesser-known TV series such as Breaker High and Young Hercules, in which he starred as Hercules from 1998 to 1999. Even though he has no formal acting training under his belt, Gosling was given a role in the critically acclaimed Remember the Titans in 2000, starring Denzel Washington, after which his fame grew. He then began appearing in a number of films, starting with The Believer in 2001, which was named the Grand Jury Prize winner at the Sundance Film Festival, and 2002’s The Slaughter Rule.
Also in 2002, Gosling co-starred with Sandra Bullock, Ben Chaplin, and Michael Pitt in the disturbing Murder by Numbers, after which he began dating Bullock, who is more than sixteen years his senior and is currently married to Jesse James.
In 2004 came one of his most famous and beloved roles to date, as the young Noah Calhoun in the epic romance The Notebook, in which he starred opposite Canadian actress Rachel McAdams, who is four years older than Gosling. Gosling and McAdams become an item, and won the Best Kiss Award for The Notebook at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards, where they reenacted the kiss for the audience.
In 2006, Gosling starred in Half Nelson as a drug-addicted, inner-city junior-high teacher, a role for which he won a Best Actor Award at the Spirit Awards, and received nominations for an Oscar, a SAG Award, and a Broadcast Film Critics Association award.
While filming The Notebook, Gosling and McAdams were said to have argued on many occasions which sparked director Nick Cassavetes to comment on his surprise to see the two together. Clearly he saw beyond 'the kiss', as in November 2007 Gosling announced the breakup of him and McAdams. In an interview with GQ magazine Ryan refered to Rachel one of the "greatest loves of his life.
But by April 2008 Ryan had swapped his single life for a new relationship with Kirsten Dunst.
Ryan is also a musician (singer and jazz guitarist), an activist for animal rights and the ONE campaign, and owner of a Moroccan restaurant in Beverly Hills, which he opened with some friends.
