Sam Shepard
Samuel Shepard Rogers was born on November 5, 1943 in Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He is a highly successful American actor, writer, and playwright. His father was in the Air Force before retiring to become a farmer after moving his family from Illinois to California.
Following high school, Shepard studied agriculture at San Antonio Junior College. He never completed a degree, instead choosing to tour with a theater company after one year of college. He was then appointed as the playwright-in-residence at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco.
By 1963, Shepard decided to move to New York and had to wait tables in order to support himself while pursuing a career in theater on the side. Throughout 1964, Shepard’s one-act plays were produced in off-off-Broadway productions. By the time he reached the age of 30, Shepard had already written and produced over 30 plays in New York. His plays are leaders in the avant-garde, contemporary industry. Each of his plays also tends to examine morality and spiritual starvation.
Around the same time Shepard became successful as a playwright, he also began nursing a career in film as an actor and scriptwriter. The first film he co-wrote was Zabriskie Point (1970). Some films he has acted in include The Right Stuff as Chuck Yeager (1983) and Fool for Love (1985) opposite Kim Basinger. He then made his directorial debut in the 1988 film Far North. Other films Shepard has directed include Silent Tongue (1994) which he also wrote, The Pelican Brief (1993), and Thunderheart (1992).
One of Shepard’s most notable plays was Buried Child (1979) for which he earned a Pulitzer Prize. This play launched Shepard into national fame as a playwright. Other than plays and films, Shepard has also collaborated with Bob Dylan on the 11 minute song, “Brownsville Girl” which Shepard co-wrote. The song was included on the film Renaldo & Clara. By 1986, Shepard was elected to The American Academy of Arts and Letters.
From 1969-1984 Shepard was married to O-Lan Barna with whom he had one son, named Jesse. In 1982, Sam starred in the film, Frances opposite Jessica Lange. They had an affair and he moved into her place in 1983. They still live together in Manhattan though they have never married. They have two children together, named Hanna and Walker. Shepard has previously dated poet and musician Patti Smith. Shepard even wrote the play, Cowboy Mouth for her. |
