Samuel L. Jackson
Samuel Leroy Jackson was born on December 21, 1948 in Washington, D.C. His mother and grandparents raised him as an only child in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His father lived in Missouri before dying from alcoholism.
Jackson went to Riverside High, which was a segregated school. While attending the school, Jackson honed his musical skills, playing the French horn and the trumpet in the school orchestra. Following high school, he attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. While attending, Jackson founded the “Just Us Theater.” Following a two-year suspension from the school; he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama in 1972.
Throughout the 1970s, Jackson was an active participant in the black student movement. During this time he also joined the Negro Ensemble Company, along with fellow actor, Morgan Freeman. He was suspended from Morehouse resulting from his participation in a protest against the University because they failed to have black trustees or start a black studies program. The protest resulted in taking several hostages, including the father of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
While attending Morehouse College, Jackson met and fell in love with actress Latanya Richardson, whom he eventually married. Together the couple has one daughter, Zoe, who was born in 1982 and is currently attending culinary school. Today they reside in Los Angeles, California.
Samuel began acting in college, appearing in The Threepenny Opera. Following college, Jackson moved to New York City in 1976. After his move, Samuel worked as a doorman at the Manhattan Plaza subsidized apartments to make ends meet. The apartment building he worked at was home to quite a few actors and actresses, one of them being actor Giancarlo Esposito. Jackson later co-starred with Esposito in Amos & Andrew (1993).
Jackson began his film career in the late 1980s by taking on small roles in films such as Coming to America (1988) starring Eddie Murphy. He began to receive acclaim for his roles in the early 1990s. One of his first notable performances was in the film Jungle Fever (1991) directed by Spike Lee, where he won a Best Supporting Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Samuel worked with Lee on several other movies including Do the Right Thing (1989) and Mo’ Better Blues (1990) which co-starred Denzel Washington and Wesley Snipes. In 2000, Jackson was honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Jackson’s most recent films include: Snakes on a Plane (2006) and Home of the Brave (2006), which will star rapper 50 Cent. He will also be doing a parody of March of the Penguins, which will be called Farce of the Penguins. Then he will be teaming up with his co-star from Star Wars, Hayden Christensen for the sci-fi film Jumper.
Other than acting, Samuel is also a sports fan. His favorite basketball team is the Harlem Globetrotters. While he was shooting the British film The 51st State (renamed in the U.S. to Formula 51) Jackson became a fan of the Liverpool Football Club. Jackson also loves to play golf, and has become very skillful. He has said in interviews that if he had to choose any other career besides acting, it would be a professional golfer on the PGA tour. |
