Sara Ramirez Tony Award winner Sara Ramirez is best known for her role as orthopedic surgeon Doctor Calliope "Callie" Torres in the top-rated television drama, Grey’s Anatomy. She joined the show as a fulltime cast member during its third season after making a few appearances during the second season. Although Sara graduated from high school in San Diego, California, she was born on August 31, 1976 in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, a popular Mexican beach resort on the Pacific. After high school, Sara pursued music at the Julliard Drama School in New York City where she developed her rich and smoky alto singing voice. Shortly after her graduation she debuted on Broadway starring as Wahzinak in Paul Simon’s The Capeman in 1998. She followed that with a starring role in The Gershwins’ Fascinating Rhythm (1999), which was written and conceived by, by Mark Lamos and Mel Marvin. She received an Outer Critics Circle nomination for Best Actress for her role in the musical. In 2001 Sara played Felicia in the Broadway musical, A Class Act, a biography based on the life of Ed Kleban. During the same year she performed in The Vagina Monologues with Tovah Feldshuh and Suzanne Bertish. She was also part of the ensemble in the 2001 big-screen remake of Broadway play Chicago. In movies, Sara landed brief roles as Rose, the Zabar's Cashier, in You've Got Mail (1998) and the cop at the carjacking in Spider-Man (2002). Television guest star appearances include Hannah in the soap opera, As the World Turns, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Welcome to New York, Baseball Wives (an HBO pilot show), Third Watch, Spin City, Talk to Me, the season finale of NYPD Blue in 2004, and New York, Star Patrol (a Fox pilot show).
In 2005 Sara was seen as Lady of the Lake in the Broadway smash hit Monty Python’s Spamolot written by Eric Idle and John Du Prez and directed by Mike Nichols. She won two awards for her performance: a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical and an Outer Critics Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical. Her concerts include Martinis at the Martin Sara Ramirez with Hollis Resnik Concert at The Ravinia, Bravo Bernstein (MTW’s 20th Anniversary Gala concert at the Hudson Theater), and The Barrington Stage Company Gala where she sang “Wanting Her More” from The Game. On September 20, 2006 she was guest co-host of The View with other co-host guests Fergie and Ben Affleck. Sara voices the main character in the 1999 Play Station video game, Um Jammer Lammy. She repeated her role in the 2001 Play Station 2 game, PaRappa the Rapper 2. |
