Sarah Mclachlan Bio

Sarah McLachlan

Grammy winning singer and songwriter Sarah McLachlan was born on January 28, 1968, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Growing up, McLachlan took vocal lessons and was classically trained in piano and guitar. She attended the renowned fine arts school, the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) for one year, but shifted her focus to fronting the new wave band, October Game. This soon led to a solo record deal offer from Nettwerk Records for the then nineteen year old McLachlan. Although she was initially hesitant to accept the contract, McLachlan eventually conceded, and moved to the opposite side of the country to live in Vancouver, British Columbia.

After her debut album in 1988, Touch, was well received, McLachlan was then signed to Arista Records, which reissued Touch worldwide in 1989. Her follow-up album in 1991, Solace, received much air play and established a strong following for McLachlan with U.S. audiences.

In September of 1992, McLachlan concluded a fourteen month album tour with a visit to Cambodia and Thailand with Christian relief organization World Vision. Inspired by what she witnessed there, McLachlan then retreated to Montreal, where her next six months in studio isolation produced Fumbling Toward Ecstasy in 1993. The album was certified platinum, and boasted the Top 100 singles "Possession" and "Good Enough." In 1995, McLachlan released The Freedom Sessions, which featured alternate versions of tracks from Fumbling Toward Ecstasy. The following year, McLachlan released a compilation of non-LP tracks and remixes in Canada, called Rarities, B-Sides & Other Stuff

On February 7, 1997, McLachlan wed her long-time drummer, Ashwin Sood, in Jamaica. The year 1997 also saw McLachlan working on her fourth album, Surfacing, which debuted at number two on the pop charts and also featured the theme song from 1995's The Brothers McMullen, "I Will Remember You."

McLachlan’s next endeavor was founding the successful Lilith Fair tour, which showcased emerging female singers and songwriters such as Jewel, Queen Latifah, and Nelly Furtado; and raised more than $7 million for charities. McLachlan’s 1999 multi-platinum album Mirrorball featured performances from the Lilith Fair tour, and was also her first live release.

On April 6, 2002, McLachlan gave birth to daughter, India Ann Sushil Sood, in Vancouver. After a brief hiatus, McLachlan released Afterglow in 2003 and embarked on a promotional tour through to 2005. Also in 2005, McLachlan performed as part of Bob Geldof’s G8 summit protest, Live 8, and also released her second remix album, Bloom. In 2006, McLachlan released Wintersong, a compilation of traditional and modern Christmas songs.

McLachlan has been recognized with three Grammy Awards, including Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1997 for "Building A Mystery," and in 1999 for the live version of "I Will Remember You;" as well as Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 1997 for "Last Dance."

McLachlan has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, and collaborated with several artists, including Bryan Adams, Josh Groban, Sheryl Crow, and even Run DMC’s Darryl McDaniels, who credits McLachlan’s song "Angel" with helping him to recover from depression.

In September of 2003, McLachlan founded The Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach Program, which provides free music education classes to inner city youth whose school music programs have been nixed by funding cutbacks.
