Sean Paul Bio

Sean Paul

From his Jamaican roots, Sean Paul came to the land of opportunity and captivated the United States and the rest of the globe with his funky reggaeton sound. Working with the likes of Beyonce and opening for Mariah Carey, Sean has come a long way from the clubs he once frequented.

Sean Paul was born on January 8th, 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica. Before becoming a sought-after performer, Sean played for the national water polo team until he was twenty-one. He quit water polo to pursue his passion for music. Paul was especially interested in dancehall music and loved to create his own tracks. He wrote his own songs, and Paul’s aptitude and enthusiasm soon led to a job as a DJ.

He found his first taste of musical success in his native Jamaica, when he released his debut single Baby Girl in 1996, the popularity of which led to more hit singles including Deport Them, Excite Me, and Infiltrate. Just three years after his first single hit the airwaves, Sean began to break in to the lucrative U.S. market.

His first project was a collabaration with Mr. Vegas to produce a track for rapper DMX. The song was included in the film Belly. Shortly thereafter, Paul worked with rapper Spanner Banner to record the song Ladies Man. In the same year, he reached the top ten of the Billboard Rap chart with his single, Hot Gal Today.

In 2000, Paul performed at Summer Jam 2000 in New York City and released his first full length album, Stage One, with VP Records. It was a successful first effort, but it would be his 2002 album, Dutty Rock, that would propel Sean to superstardom.

With the successful singles Gimme the Light and the chart-topping Get Busy, the album sold over six million copies. Adding to his exposure was his work with Beyonce on her single Baby Boy. Riding the wave of fame, Sean appeared on Punk’d and Making The Video. His videos for the hits Like Glue, Temperature and Breathe could be seen on music channels throughout the world. As if things couldn’t get any better, Paul received a Grammy Award for best Reggae album for Dutty Rock.

The Trinity, the performer’s third album, was released in September of 2005 and featured the hits We Be Blazin and Ever Burnin. Paul’s signature sound once again earned him top honors. This time it was a Billboard Music Award for top-selling Reggae album of the year. In 2006 he was the opening act for Mariah Carey on her Adventures of Mimi Tour and has also been featured on Rihanna’s single Break it Off. Paul does plan to release a fourth album, a more politically-minded one, in 2007.

Although Sean is known for his on-stage flirtations with his femals fans, he revealed in a recent interview that there is a special lady in his life. For the time being, however, he is keeping any details about the lucky lady strictly confidential.
