Selma Blair Bio
Selma Blair

Actress Selma Blair was born Selma Blair Beitner on June 23, 1972 in Southfield, Michigan. Growing up, Selma attended Hebrew school. Her Hebrew name is “Batsheva,” which means “daughter of the oath.” In high school, Selma disliked her first name, and opted to go by her second name, Blair. Selma went on to attend Kalamazoo College from 1990-92. She then transferred to the University of Michigan, where she earned a combined bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and English in 1994.

After graduating from college, Blair moved to New York to pursue a career in photography. Her plans changed, and she soon found herself studying at the Stella Adler Conservatory and the Column Theater. Selma earned her Screen Actor's Guild card a week after enrolling at the Conservatory. Shortly after that, Blair was discovered by an agent, and well on her way to a career in film.

Selma started out acting in various independent films, including Strong Island Boys (1997), Girl (1998), and Brown's Requiem (1998), in which she had her first starring role. She also appeared in the made-for-TV movie No Laughing Matter (1997) and joined the emerging genre of teen films in Can't Hardly Wait (1998), starring Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Throughout the late 90s, Selma appeared in various television shows, including the series premiere of Fox’s Getting Personal (1998). She also landed a featured guest role as an alcoholic teen in the CBS drama Promised Land (1996-99). Blair’s star was on the rise as the decade drew to a close, and she was cast as the lead in the WB sitcom, Zoe (1999-2000) which was later titled Zoe, Duncan, Jack, and Jane.

Selma’s major breakthrough role came in 1999, when she starred alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon, and Ryan Phillippe in Cruel Intentions. In 2000, Blair received an MTV Movie Award in the “Best Kiss” category for a scene in which Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character teaches her character, Cecile Caldwell, how to kiss. Selma teamed up with Reese Witherspoon again to star in the 2001 surprise hit, Legally Blonde. Also in 2001, Selma starred in the indie film Storytelling, in which she has a nude scene.

In 2002, Selma starred in The Sweetest Thing alongside Cameron Diaz and Christina Applegate.
Selma got along well with her co-stars; saying of Cameron “I think she hangs the moon.” She is also close friends with fellow actresses Reese Witherspoon and Julia Styles.

In 2003, Selma starred in A Guy Thing. She was said to have quit swearing after the film, citing an article in the Enquirer which reported that her cast-mates on the film were offended by her cursing, and inspired her to turn over a new leaf.

In 2004, Selma took a departure from chick flicks and teen scenes to star in the comic book adaptation of Hellboy. One special-effect scene, which featured a giant attacking tentacle, reportedly nauseated Selma, who has been a vegetarian since having to dissect a squid for a class assignment in high school.

Selma has been romantically linked to actor Jason Schwartzman, who most recently starred in Marie Antoinette with Kirsten Dunst. In 2004, Selma married musician Emuukha Rodan Zappa, son of late music legend, Frank Zappa. The couple was wed at the Beverly Hills home of actress Carrie Fisher. On June 21, 2006, Selma filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
