Shannyn Sossamon
Shannyn Sossamon is a fairly new American actress who acts simply for the love of acting. She’s made it known she’ll quit show business once acting loses its joy for her. In fact, although her acting career is only just beginning, she already gave up it up for a short time when stardom no longer appealed to her.
She made her first film appearance in 2001 as Jocelyn, opposite Heath Ledger, in A Knight's Tale.
Shannyn landed the part as Jocelyn in an unusual way. Trained as a dancer and DJ, she decided to do a favor for a friend by helping out as a DJ (for about 30 minutes) at Gwyneth Paltrow’s birthday party in 1999. One of the guests at the party was casting director Francine Maisler. Maisler was impressed enough with Shannyn that she got the DJ’s number from someone else at the party. In a matter of months Shannyn was acting in her first film as the female lead.
In 2002 Shannyn appeared opposite Josh Hartnett in the romantic comedy, 40 Days and 40 Nights. The movie is about a young man who decides to stay celibate for 40 days after a brutal breakup, something that Shannyn would never do. She’s been quoted as saying, “Anyway, celibacy is overrated. Just ask the priests.”
After 40 Days and 40 Nights Shannyn became bored with Hollywood, considered quitting acting, and got a job in a record store. The job only lasted a few months because not long after this Shannyn was offered a part in the romantic-comedy, The Rules of Attraction (2002). The movie renewed her interest in acting and the following year Shannyn appeared with Heath Ledger in the horror movie, The Order. In 2006 she appeared in the comedy The Other Side of Simple with Vince Vaughn and Don Cheadle.
Shannyn was born as Shannon Marie Kahoolani Sossamon on October 3, 1978 in Honolulu, Hawaii. When she was three, Shannyn moved with her family to Reno, Nevada where she later attended Galena High School.
After high school Shannyn moved to Los Angeles to study dance at Dance Unlimited and pursue a career in dance. In 1995 Shannyn changed the “o” to a “y” in her birth name.
While at Dance Unlimited, Shannyn worked as a DJ in small local clubs and appeared in television commercials for Oldsmobile, Kmart, Kodak, and The Gap. She also appeared in a Daft Punk music video as an extra.
Shannyn later appeared in music videos for the Goo Goo Dolls, Korn, and Mick Jagger.
In 2002 she ranked number 55 in Stuff magazine’s “102 Sexiest Women in the World,” and number 33 in Maxim magazine’s “Hot 100 of 2002” supplement.
She gave birth to her first son, Audio Science Clayton on May 29, 2003, and currently works as an LA DJ several nights a week when not working on a movie. |
