Shaquille Oneal Bio
Shaquille ONeal

Shaquille ONeal is known for many things, but mostly for his basketball talent and 7’1” stature. He has coined many nicknames for himself such as Superman, The Diesel, The Big Aristotle, The Big Baryshnikov, M.D.E (Most Dominant Ever), L.C.L. (Last Center Left), and even Doctor Shaq. For most of us, he’ll always be known just as “Shaq.”

Shaquille (meaning Little Warrior in Arabic) Rashaun ONeal, born March 6, 1972, was always big, and was 6’6” at the age of 13. He became a basketball star in high school, and was named High School Player of the Year. Shaq moved on to Louisiana State University and studied for a degree in business while also playing on the basketball team, twice earning the honors of first team All-American and SEC Player of the year, and once earned the honor of National Player of the Year. He also set an NCAA record for the most shots blocked in one game.

ONeal left LSU after his junior year when he was drafted by the Orlando Magic. He would later finish off his studies at LSU during his summers off from basketball, and would get his BA in general studies with a political science minor. He never regretted leaving school early, as after spending that first summer working under basketball pro Magic Johnson, ONeal was then named the Rookie of the Year and voted into the All-Stars.

During his second season with the Magic, ONeal led the NBA in field goal percentage, had the first triple-double of his career, was voted into his second All-Star Team, leading the Magic to its first ever post-season. During the next season he led the NBA in scoring and helped the Magic win the Atlantic Division of the NBA. His fourth season wasn’t everything he’d hoped it would be, as he was injured, and ended up missing 28 games. Regardless, the Magic again made it into the playoffs, and that summer ONeal was named to the United States Olympic Men’s Basketball team, helping them win a gold medal.

As a free agent after the Olympics, ONeal sought a change of location, and became a Los Angeles Laker, signing the largest ever sport sports contract at the time, a seven year deal for 120 million dollars. His first year as a Laker, he was injured once again, yet that year and the next, the Lakers still went to the playoffs. During Shaq’s third season with the Lakers, Kobe Bryant joined the team, and the following season Phil Jackson became their new coach as he implemented ONeal and Bryant into his triangle offense scheme. This brought the Lakers three consecutive NBA titles, with ONeal named the MVP of each of them and the MVP of one of those regular seasons.

A few seasons later, ONeal decided that the remaining years on his contract weren’t going to be enough and wanted a contract extension. He was offered one at some point, and rumors persist as to why he didn’t accept it. Rumors about problems with management or with Kobe Bryant were flying, but regardless of the reason, ONeal moved on once again, landing back in Florida, this time with the Miami Heat. Once again, Shaq brought a team to the playoffs and on to a Championship win. This was his fourth title in seven years, and once again Shaq was besieged by injuries.

ONeal started to find his way into the entertainment world, pursuing both music and acting. He has recorded six albums, although only the first one, Shaq Diesel, went gold. His first movie, Blue Chips, wasn’t much of a stretch for ONeal as he played a college basketball player. In his next movie, Kazaam, he played the title character, a genie, and in Steel, ONeal starred as a weapons designer, appearing with Annabeth Gish, Judd Nelson, and Richard Roundtree.

With plans of becoming a police officer after he retires from basketball, ONeal has worked with both the Los Angeles Police Department and the Miami Police Department. At one time he was also sworn in as an officer with the Bedford County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office, working with their “Blue Ridge Thunder” program which aims to catch on-line predators of minors.
