Sharon Lawrence Biography American actress Sharon Lawrence gained notoriety early in her career when she landed a recurring role on the hit series NYPD Blue. Ever since, she has appeared in various television and film projects, most notable of which was with the popular soap opera/drama Desperate Housewives. Sharon Elizabeth Lawrence was born June 29, 1961 in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was subsequently raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, where her father was reporter Tom Lawrence. She pursued her secondary education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Lawrence made her onscreen debut in 1992 with Civil Wars opposite Mariel Hemingway after which she spent one episode with the gang at Beverly Hills, 90210. She shared the screen with Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Luke Perry, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling.
Her first notable film role came in the form of The Shaggy Dog in 1994. She played onscreen wife to Ed Begley Jr. She followed with The Face on the Milk Cartoon. Kellie Martin appeared as well. But she earned these various film roles thanks to her exposure from the highly popular and acclaimed cop drama NYPD Blue. Joining the cast in 1993, she portrayed the wife of troubled detective Andy Sipowicz, played by Dennis Franz. She was with the show until 1999. With the end of her stint on the series, Lawrence’s career stalled slightly. With her exposure, however, she continued to find steady work in film and television. Her first highly commercial work post-NYPD Blue came in 2000 with the James Marsden, Kate Hudson drama Gossip. She also gained notice when she took a small role in Little Black Book with Brittany Murphy, Holly Hunter, and Ron Livington. Gaining additional exposure, she appeared on the hit series Desperate Housewives as Maisy Gibbons. She also landed a lead in the new series Hidden Palms, while she had a recent guest appearance on Monk. She is currently in post-production for The Capture of the Green River Killer with Thomas Cavanagh. She is also in post-production for The Weight with costars Linda Hamilton and Edward Asner.
In her personal life, she married Dr. Tom Apostle on May 31, 2002. They are currently still together. In an odd twist of events, Lawrence married Apostle in the same Greek Orthodox church as her noted NYPD Blue character, Syliva Costas, married fictional husband Andy Sipowicz. Outside of acting, Lawrence put on her poker face at the World Poker Tour in order to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association as well as Project ALS. Her other charity work includes raising money for the World Wildlife Fund. |
