Shawn Wayans
Shawn Wayans is part of a creative family who has achieved success in a series of collaborative projects. Born in 1971 in New York City, Shawn is an actor, writer and comic. He is one of ten siblings in this remarkable family affair. Three of his brothers are involved in acting, comic writing, and production. They are Keenen Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans and Marlon Wayans. His sister, Kim Wayans, is an actress and cousin Craig Wayans is a screenwriter. Shawn’s nephew Damien Dante Wayans is an actor, screenwriter, and producer.
In 1993, Shawn Wayans appeared in an episode of the hit TV show Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper with regulars Mark Curry and Holly Robinson Peete. The big break came when his brother Keenen created the comic sketch show, In Living Color. Shawn was in several episodes and Damon and Marlon contributed to the writing. Kim and Marlon also appeared as did future stars Jim Carrey and Jamie Foxx.
The next big project for the brothers was a sitcom that ran from 1995 – 1999. Titled The Wayans Bros, it was written by Shawn, Marlon and others. Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans were in several episodes and the series also starred Phill Lewis and John Witherspoon
Shawn Wayans was given a significant part in an action thriller movie directed by Michael Hurst. Called New Blood, it featured John Hurt, Nick Moran and Carrie-Anne Moss. Another family movie followed with the release of Scary Movie. The writing team included Shawn and Marlon, with Keenen directing and taking a part. It was a popular hit and a funny parody of horror movies. Shawn and Marlon also had parts along with Carmen Electra, Dave Sheridan, Anna Faris, Jon Abrahams and Regina Hall. The sequel, Scary Movie 2, soon followed. Keenen directed again with Shawn and Marlon writing and taking parts. The cast included Faris and Hall once again and new additions were James DeBello, David Cross, Tim Curry, James Woods and Tori Spelling. There were two more sequels but Shawn didn’t appear in them.
In 2004 the comedy White Chicks was released. Shawn, Marlon and Keenen led the writing team. Shawn Wayans and brother Marlon play FBI agents who work undercover as white women, a transformation that is remarkably convincing. The cast also includes Jaime King and Frankie Faison. Little Man was released in 2006, another comedy directed by Keenen (who also co-wrote the script with Shawn and Marlon). Marlon and Shawn starred, supported by Tracy Morgan and Kerry Washington.
Another 2006 project involving the writing talents of Shawn Wayans and brother Marlon is a made for television animation called Thugaboo: Sneaker Madness. Marlon, Shawn and sister Kim supply the voices. Other characters are voiced by George Gore II and David Alan Grier. It looks like the Wayans family is here to stay, having cornered the market in popular film comedy.
