Sheena Easton Probably the first ‘manufactured’ pop singer, brought to the attention of the public by UK television presenter and activist, Esther Rantzen, in the early 1980’s when she produced the BBC program ‘The Big Time’ and selected Easton as the subject of a documentary film which was planned to chronicle a relative unknown's rise to pop-music stardom. Sheena Easton was born Sheena Orr on April 27th 1959 in Bellishill, Lanarkshire, Scotland the youngest of six children of a steel mill laborer, Alex Orr, and his wife Annie. In 1964, at the tender of age of five, Sheena made her first public performance when she sang ’Early One Morning’ at her uncle and aunt’s 25th wedding anniversary party. Four years later Sheena lost her father, and her mother was left to raise the six children on her own. Taking on menial work that sapped most of her time she still made a wonderful job of raising her children, including teaching them all to read before they were even enrolled in school. Sheena’s first inspiration to become a professional singer came when she saw the movie ‘The Way We Were’ starring Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand, which had Streisand singing the title song over the opening credits. Following that moment of inspiration Sheena enrolled in the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama while at the same time singing with a local group ‘Something Else’. It was during this time that she was selected by Esther Rantzen to appear on the BBC show ‘The Big Time’. This saw Sheena being the first manufactured performer and being followed through the next few decades by groups such as ‘Boy Zone’ and ‘Girls Aloud’.
The exposure on the show resulted in a record deal with EMI and also pushed Easton's 1980 debut singles, "Modern Girl" and "9 to 5," in to the U.K. Top Ten where she became the first female artist to score two simultaneous Top Ten hits. The single also saw her with a top 20 U.S. pop charts hit with "Modern Girl" cracking the Top 20 just a few months after the UK hit. In 1979 Sheena had married fellow Scot, Sandi Easton but the marriage only lasted eight months. From the marriage Sheena took her last name, Easton, and has kept it throughout her singing career. 1981 was the year that really saw Sheena hitting the big time when she joined the likes of Shirley Bassey, Tina Turner and Nancy Sinatra, being asked to perform the title song to the 1981 James Bond movie ‘For Your Eyes Only’ which starred Roger Moore as Bond. Just 2 years later in 1983, she duetted with Kenny Rogers on the huge hit "We've Got Tonight” which was originally recorded by Bob Seger. She later followed it with her first acting role in America, as Don Johnson's ill-fated TV wife on ‘Miami Vice ‘and by scoring the number two hit with the song she snag in the last episode, "The Lover in Me" when her character was written out of the series, being murdered in 1989. Trying marriage again in 1984, Sheena tied the knot with a talent agent, Rob Light but once again the marriage was short lived and after just eighteen months she was single again. It was also in that year that she began a collaboration with Prince who transformed Sheena from a ‘nice girl next door’ reputation into a sexy dancing pop diva. The early 1990’s began a period in Sheena’s life where she spent much of her time performing on stage, appearing in a revival of Grease and making several appearances on Broadway.
After gaining US citizenship in 1992 Sheena adopted a baby boy, Jake, and then in 1996 she adopted a baby sister for Jake, Skylar. Sheena’s next attempt at marriage came in the summer of 1997 when she met producer Tim Delarm and later married him in Las Vegas in July of that year. This marriage survived just 12 months. By 2001 Sheena was engaged to John Minoli, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon whom she went on to marry in 2002 and again divorced in 2003. Making well advised investments in the Florida property market has put Sheena on the Sunday Times Rich List. She now lives in Las Vegas with her two children and often performs in the city's casinos.
