Shelley Duvall
Shelley Duvall is a film and television actress who was discovered by the respected film director, Robert Altman. She has made several films for him and a string of other great directors. She is especially known for playing on the edge characters. Born in 1949, Duvall was raised in Houston, Texas.
Robert Altman cast Duvall in her first movie role in the comedy, Brewster McCloud, as the lead in 1970. It co-starred Bud Cort, Sally Kellerman, and Stacy Keach. Altman cast her again in the western, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie. She then appeared in a crime drama for Altman called Thieves Like Us and his political drama, Nashville. Shelley played opposite Keith Carradine in Thieves Like Us, a film that also featured Louise Fletcher and Tom Skerritt. Nashville co-starred Ned Beatty, Ronee Blakley, and Geraldine Chaplin.
The next movie for Altman won Duvall the Best Actress award at Cannes in 1977. The well deserved award was for her role in 3 Women, also starring Sissy Spacek. Woody Allen cast Shelley in his landmark movie, Annie Hall which starred Woody with Diane Keaton and Tony Roberts in support.
Working with star directors continued for Shelley Duvall when she was picked by Stanley Kubrick to play opposite Jack Nicholson in The Shining. The disturbing horror film was adapted from the Stephen King novel and Scatman Crothers supported.
Shelley Duvall was re-united with Robert Altman for the film version of Popeye. The old television cartoon favorite was adapted for the big screen with Shelley playing Olive Oyl. Robin Williams played Popeye. This was followed by a fantasy, directed by Terry Gilliam, called Time Bandits. The cast included John Cleese, Michael Palin, Sean Connery, Katherine Helmond, and Ian Holm.
A successful television venture occupied Shelley Duvall from 1982 through 1987. She produced, narrated, and hosted a children’s series called Faerie Tale Theatre. The series adapted well known fairy stories. Shelley acted in them too, and gathered an impressive cast around her. This included Vincent Price, Eric Idle, Anjelica Huston, and Rene Auberjonois.
Shelley Duvall continued to make films and featured in the Fred Schepisi re-working of Cyrano de Bergerac, called Roxanne. The modernized comedy starred Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah. Jane Campion cast Shelley in Portrait of a Lady, starring Nicole Kidman. The period piece also featured John Malkovich, Christian Bale, Barbara Hershey, Mary-Louise Parker, Shelley Winters, and Richard E. Grant.
Shelley Duvall is currently single, after her marriage ended in divorce in the 1970s. Paul Simon is a former boyfriend. Shelley’s brother, Stewart Duvall, has also worked as an actor. |
