Shirley Jones
Shirley Jones is a singer and actress who made her name in film musicals and then reached a new audience as the head of The Partridge television family on TV. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1934 and became Miss Pittsburgh 1952 after winning the beauty contest.
One of the most popular musicals of the 1950s was Oklahoma! Directed by Fred Zinnemann, it featured Shirley Jones with Gordon MacRae, Gloria Grahame and Rod Steiger. Shirley made another musical starring Gordon MacRae with Carousel, directed by Henry King. Cameron Mitchell also featured. In 1960, the powerful drama Elmer Gangtry was released. Starring Burt Lancaster, Richard Brooks also cast Shirley along with Jean Simmons and Arthur Kennedy. Shirley performed in another musical with The Music Man, starring Robert Preston. Directed by Morton DaCosta, it also featured Buddy Hackett.
From 1970 through 1974, The Partridge Family was a hit show, featuring the fictitious pop group who were also related. Shirley Jones played Shirley Partridge, Mum to her musical kids. Together, this all-American family sang, played and had adventures together. The series also made a star of teen heartthrob, David Cassidy who would go on to be a major solo pop sensation. In reality, David was Shirley’s stepson. The other children were played by Susan Dey, Danny Bonaduce, and Suzanne Crough.
After The Partridge Family hung up their instruments, Shirley Jones continued to be in demand for film and TV roles. She was cast in the sequel to The Poseidon Adventure. Called Beyond The Poseidon Adventure, it was directed by Irwin Allen and the plot involves a group of fortune hunters who want to salvage the fortune left on the passenger ship. The cast featured Michael Caine, Sally Field, Telly Savalas, Peter Boyle, Jack Warden, and Karl Malden.
Shirley Jones made two episodes of the TV series and the feature length film version for television of Hotel, from the Arthur Hailey novel. Jerry London directed the movie and James Brolin starred with Bette Davis, Morgan Fairchild, and Connie Sellecca.
A release date for 2007 has been set for a musical, animated movie Jones has been involved in. Called Christmas Is Here Again, it’s narrated by Jay Leno and directed by Robert Zappia. Shirley supplies her voice for one of the characters, as does Edward Asner, Kathy Bates, and Andy Griffith.
Jones has also been a guest player in several popular TV shows. She lent her talents to an episode of the soap, Melrose Place with regulars Heather Locklear, Courtney Thorne Smith, Thomas Calabro, and Andrew Shue. She also appeared in Sabrina, the Teenage Witch alongside Melissa Joan Hart and Nick Bakay. In 2003, Jones was in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit with the regular cast of Christopher Meloni, Mariska Hargitay, and Ice-T.
The late actor, Jack Cassidy was Shirley’s first husband and they had three sons together. Shaun Cassidy is a singer and actor. Patrick Cassidy and Ryan Cassidy are both actors. David Cassidy is the son from Jack’s first marriage to actress Evelyn Ward. Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy divorced in 1974. In 1977, Shirley married comedian and actor, Marty Ingels. |
