Sinbad
David Adkin (also known as Sinbad) was born on November 10, 1956 in Bent Harbor, Michigan. His parents were Reverend Dr. Donald and Louise Adkins. David grew up with three brother and two sisters. He was nicknamed “Red” on account of his red hair as a child. Sinbad was known for telling jokes to his siblings and would often do anything for attention, no matter what the cost. Sinbad has two children from a previous marriage. He is currently married to Meredith Adkins with whom he has one child, named Royce Beckly.
Following high school, David attended the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado between 1974 and 1978 on a basketball scholarship. His impressive 6’5” frame made him a success on the team where he lettered for two seasons.
David began his comedic career in the 1980s, which is when he adopted the stage name of Sinbad, which to him symbolizes strength, optimism and adventure. Sinbad began working with the “Poverty Tour” in 1983 where he traveled by Greyhound bus to comedy clubs across the nation. He had no money so he had to work off his meals and hotel rooms as well.
Sinbad’s shows are known to be family friendly. He has also made a point of working with his own family. His brother, Mark, is his personal manager. His brother, Michael, is his financial consultant. His other brother, Donald, is his sound technician and photographer. Sinbad’s sister, Dorothea, is his road manager while his other sister, Donna, is his publicist.
Sinbad made one of his first television appearances on the show Star Search hosted by Ed McMahon. Although Sinbad made it to the finals for stand-up comedy, he lost in the final round to John Kassir.
Sinbad then began hosting It’s Showtime at the Apollo from 1989 to 1991. Throughout the early 1990s, Sinbad’s comedic and acting career began to take off. Following his hosting stint with Apollo, Sinbad hosted his own talk show, VIBE. He then starred on a show called A Different World co-starring Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardinson, and Darryl M. Bell.
Sinbad made his film debut in the comedy Necessary Roughness (1991), co-starring Robert Loggia, Rob Schneider and Kathy Ireland. He has also starred in Houseguest (1995) alongside Phil Hartman.
As his celebrity persona grew, Sinbad began starring in his own show, The Sinbad Show, which aired on Fox. Unfortunately the show was cancelled due to low ratings. His career stalled shortly thereafter and it was not until the late 1990s that he came back to television, appearing on an infomercial for the Tae Bo exercise system.
Most recently, Sinbad has returned to hosting Showtime at the Apollo (formerly known as It’s Showtime at the Apollo). He has also been ranked as number 78 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 greatest stand-ups of all time. Sinbad also tours with the Blue program, which is a unit of active duty Air Force members who perform shows throughout the world. |
