Sofia Coppola
Sofia Carmina Coppola was born on May 14, 1971 and began her career in the movie industry before she had learned how to speak, thanks largely to her father, director Francis Ford Coppola. Sofia was given an un-credited role in The Godfather (1972) which was directed by her father, as the Christened baby boy. She would then have small parts in The Godfather II (1974) and The Godfather III (1990) to become one of the few cast members to have a part in all three films.
Much of Sofia’s early life is intertwined with her career as a budding actress. Her brother is Roman Coppola and her cousin is actor Nicolas Cage. By the age of 11, Sofia had adopted the stage name, “Domino” because she thought it sounded glamorous. Other than The Godfather, Sofia also had a bit part in The Outsiders, also directed by her father. Her scene was with Matt Dillon, C. Thomas Howell and Ralph Macchio where they were at the drive in. Other than working on film sets, Sofia also attended Mills College studying photography and the California Institute of the Arts studying painting.
Throughout the early 1990s, Coppola’s drawings and paintings were often featured in magazines geared toward the teenage girls such as Seventeen and YM. By the mid-1990s, Sofia had co-founded a clothing line with Kim Gordon and even had her own TV show on Comedy Central called Hi Octane. The show featured many guests from the underground music world including Beck, Donovan Leitch and Mike Watt.
Coppola landed her first film role without the help of her father in 1987 with Anna. Shortly after she appeared in The Godfather III she received a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst New Star. This practically ended her career as an actress and caused her to focus her efforts as a director.
Sofia’s first efforts as a director proved to be fruitful for her. She wrote, produced, and directed Lick the Star (1996) starring Robert Schwartzman (also a cousin of Coppola) followed by The Virgin Suicides (1999) starring Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, James Woods and Kathleen Turner.
Her third film was Lost in Translation (2003) starring Scarlet Johansson, Bill Murray and Giovanni Ribisi. The film earned her an Academy Award for original screenplay, followed by three Golden Globe awards for Best Picture and an Oscar nomination for Best Director.
Sofia has most recently directed Marie-Antoinette which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006 to mixed reviews. The film has her once again directing cousin Jason Schwartzman along with Kirsten Dunst.
In 1999, Sofia married director Spike Jonze. The marriage ended in 2003. Following the split from her husband, it was rumored that she began dating long-time friend and fellow director, Quentin Tarantino. Currently, Coppola is expecting her first child with boyfriend Thomas Mars in November of 2006.
