Star Jones
Star Jones has gone from being often lampooned on Saturday Night Live for her weight and numerous comments about being a lawyer, to having an on-air fight with Barbara Walters. Exactly what happened in between this time has been disputed, but it seems no one can deny this woman is an interesting personality.
Born on March 24, 1962, in Badin, North Carolina, Jones spent her childhood in the Trenton projects. She graduated from Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, then entered American University in Washington, D.C. where she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, Jones moved on to the University of Houston where she earned her Juris Degree. She began her law career as an assistant district attorney in the Homicide Bureau in Brooklyn.
Jones took her knowledge of the law to Court TV and was a commentator for the William Kennedy Smith rape trial. Next, she performed the same role on The Today Show and Nightly News, both on NBC. After just a few years, Jones began her own show, Jones and Jury, which only lasted one year before it was cancelled. She returned to offering televised legal commentary, this time for Inside Edition, covering the O.J. Simpson murder trials, both criminal and civil.
Next up for Jones was starring on the daytime talk show, The View, alongside Barbara Walters, Meredith Vieira, Joy Behar, and Elizabeth Hasselbeck. Jones quickly gained notoriety on the show, and was often lampooned by Saturday Night Live and others for her large size, and for discussing legal matters on the show, while prefacing most of them with, “I am a lawyer ...”
The success of The View brought Jones some additional venues to showcase her talents. She became an author of two separate books, the first being You Have to Stand for Something, or You’ll Fall for Anything, a collection of her own autobiographical essays. Her second book dealt with the changes she had made in her life from marriage to weight loss, and was called Shine: A Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Journey to Finding Love. Known for her style and love of clothing, Jones became a spokesmodel for Payless Shoes. Along with this, she also began hosting red carpet interviews for awards shows on the E! Television Network.
Jones lost weight very publicly, and in the process married banker Al Reynolds, changing her professional name to Star Jones Reynolds. She came under fire for this lavish extravagant wedding, as much of it wasn’t paid for out of her or Reynolds’ pocket, but was donated in exchange for her mentioning the businesses on The View or on her website.
We might never know exactly how the events came about that ended Jones’ time on The View, but it’s fair to say that it didn’t end amicably. Shortly after the show announced that Meredith Vieira would be leaving to replace Katie Couric on The Today Show, Jones announced on-air that she would be leaving the show. She pointed out that The View was going in a direction she wasn’t comfortable with, making it seem as if she was referring to the news that Rosie O’Donnell would be replacing Vieira.
Walters came on air the next day and disputed this, saying that Jones had taken them all by surprise. Walters’ position was that Jones had known for months that her contract with the show would not be renewed. The View was never going to discuss that publicly, however, as they wanted to protect Jones. They were giving her time to find another job and “leave with dignity.” Walters announced instead of Jones leaving later in the summer, she was being removed from the show immediately. Later, Jones told People magazine that she felt she had been fired, and the show hinted that one of the reasons her contract was not being renewed was because of the scandal caused by her lavish wedding. |
