Stephen King
Stephen King is one of the most celebrated authors of horror, macabre, and all things strange. Even those who shy away from King’s typical horror genre know who he is. His name is synonymous with terror and though he truly does reign as King of scary things, he was once a struggling writer who no one knew.
Born Stephen Edwin King on September 21, 1947 in Portland, Maine, King’s legendary writing career actually began before he attended high school. He and adopted brother, David, created a paper they sold for 5 cents a copy. King continued writing short stories throughout high school and was first published in the magazine Comics Review in 1965 with a short story titled “I Was a Teenage Grave Robber.”
Stephen King graduated from high school in 1966 and subsequently attended the University of Maine on a scholarship. It was while attending college that he met his future wife, Tabitha Spruce. They were married in 1971 and as the saying goes “behind every good man is a better woman.” King had to take on odd jobs to pay for expenses in college and upon graduating, was able to teach high school. He was not able to make a living writing until after he had begun writing Carrie, which he initially quit and threw in the trash. Tabitha took it from the trash and encouraged him to complete the book.
In 1973, Doubleday bought Carrie and since then, King has become the best-selling horror novelist in history. The story of Carrie was followed by Stephen King classics such as Cujo, Christine, Salem’s Lot and The Shining. All of these novels were adapted to screenplays. With a near indefinite list of novels and novellas since, one might say that the pages of the Dark Tower series, which was begun decades ago, holds much of his life’s work.
Though King has written under the pen name Richard Bachman, there is ever little doubt when one picks up a book written by Stephen King. The Dark Tower series may be the only exception to his novels that are almost always adapted for screenplays. Adaptations for From a Buick 8, Black House, Talisman and Cell have already begun.
Stephen King’s film adaptations have been wildly successful, but a little-known fact is that King also supports future filmmakers with his own program “Dollar Baby.” The Dollar Baby is an idea he developed whereby select groups of aspiring filmmakers and students are granted permission to adapt one of his short stories to film for the sum of one dollar.
Stephen and wife Tabitha have three grown children and still have a residence in Maine, a popular setting for many of his stories. King is currently working on a benefit project for hunger in Africa by venturing into the comic genre. He can also be found regularly in Entertainment Weekly’s column “The Pop of King” where he regularly provides his commentary on pop culture. |
