Steve Martin Bio
Steve Martin

Stephen Glenn Martin was born on August 14, 1945 in Waco, Texas. His father, Glenn, was a salesman and aspiring actor; his mother, Mary, was a housewife. The family moved to Garden Grove, California when Steve was young and this is where he was raised. One of his first jobs was working at a magic shop at Disneyland.

Martin attended Garden Grove High School where he and classmate Kathy Westmoreland developed their own comedy routine that they would perform at coffee houses, theaters and at Knott’s Berry Farm. After graduating high school in 1963, Martin attended Santa Ana College where Diane Keaton was also in attendance at that time. He then transferred to California State University, Long Beach where he majored in philosophy, although he never completed his degree.

Steve landed his first gig in the entertainment industry as a writer thanks to his girlfriend. In 1967 she was working as a dancer on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and helped him to submit his work directly to the head writer for the show, Mason Williams. He also wrote for John Denver as well as The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. At this time, Martin also began performing his comedy act for groups like The Carpenters.

By the mid-1970’s Martin had become a noteworthy comedian. He often appeared on Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. This led to the creation of four comedy albums which were a huge success. By the end of the 1970’s, Marin had become a smash success with his comedy tours and selling out arenas.

By the end of the decade Martin had begun to break his way into films. His first short film was The Absent-Minded Waiter (1977) which co-starred Buck Henry and Teri Garr; Martin also wrote the film. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Short Film, Live Action. His first role in a feature film was in the musical Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978). The following year Martin wrote and starred in his first feature film, The Jerk, which co-starred Bernadette Peters. The film was a huge success and opened up many doors for Martin in the film world.

His most recent film projects include Shopgirl (2005) co-starring Claire Danes. Martin wrote the screenplay which was also based on a novella he wrote. Later that year he starred in Cheaper by the Dozen 2 alongside Bonnie Hunt and Hilary Duff. In 2006 he starred in The Pink Panther and is also currently working on the animated film Kung Fu Panda that features voices from Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Daniel Craig, Ian McShane and Lucy Liu.

Throughout the years Steve has been successful in many different genres of the writing business. Throughout much of the 1990s, Martin wrote numerous pieces for The New Yorker magazine. In 1993, he wrote a play called Picasso at the Lapin Agile which toured successfully throughout the U.S. He has also completed two novellas: Shopgirl (2001) and The Pleasure of My Company (2003).

One of Martin’s most expensive hobbies is collecting art. He particularly enjoys modern American art and has a personal collection that boasts pieces by Georgia O’Keefe, David Hockney, Franz Kline and Pablo Picasso. In 2005 it was announced that Martin had pledged over $1 million for the Huntington library American art collection.
