Steven Spielberg Biography
From killer sharks, a lovable alien and Harrison Ford as the all-American adventure hero, to huge dinosaurs, the Holocaust, and Tom Cruise against the aliens, we see the creative handiwork of multi-talented American film director Steven Spielberg. Steven Spielberg, considered a contemporary of filmmakers Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, John Milius, Francis Ford Coppola and Brian De Palma, is one of the most critically acclaimed, successful and influential film directors of his time. Despite numerous critics’ attacks of his directing style and several of his films, he has 24 films under his belt, including some major blockbuster hits. He has accumulated six Academy Award nominations for Best Director, and won two for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan. He also won the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, received an honorary degree from Brown University and another from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinema Television and was presented the honor of Knight Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2001.
Steven Spielberg was born December 18, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio to a Jewish family and was later raised in both New Jersey and Arizona. He has been passionate about movie-making since he was young, shooting amateur videos with his friends as a kid and teen. In 1968 he created his first short film for theatre release, Amblin—after which his first production company, Amblin Entertainment, was named. Steven Spielberg attended California State University (Long Beach) after high school to major in English and dropped out in the late 1960s to take a position as television director at Universal Studios. Thirty-five years later Steven Spielberg finished his degree and was granted a BA in film production and electronic arts. Spielberg’s first official feature film for theatrical release was The Sugarland Express in 1974. Despite good reviews, it never took off at the box office. Then producers Richard Zanuck and David Brown offered him the chance to direct Jaws, a horror flick about killer sharks starring actor Roy Scheider, which Spielberg maintains was his most difficult-to-direct film. Jaws won three Academy Awards and grossed more than US $100 million at the box office—giving Steven Spielberg the jumpstart he needed. He later rejected offers to direct both Jaws 2 and Superman to work with actor Richard Dreyfuss to direct a movie about UFOs—Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Steven Spielberg then joined forces with director, producer and friend George Lucas to create Raiders of the Lost Ark, the first of the Indiana Jones series starring Harrison Ford, in the early 1980s, which was a huge hit and garnered several Oscar nominations. The following year Spielberg directed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial—Spielberg’s personal favorite—which became the top-grossing movie of all time for many years.
If film-making and directing doesn’t keep him busy enough, his family certainly will. Spielberg has seven children: four biological, two adopted and one stepdaughter. Steven Spielberg married actress Amy Irving in 1985, only to divorce her four years later after they had one child together, Max. He married actress Kate Capshaw in 1991, who has a daughter (Jessica), and has three children with Kate: Sasha, Sawyer and Destry. Theo and Mikaela are adopted.
