Susan Dey Biography As with most child stars growing up in the public eye, Susan Dey found it difficult to shed the type casted image that came along with the healthy, wholesome girl next door role of Laurie Partridge in ‘The Partridge Family’ in which she starred in the early 1970’s. Eventually, through some less tasteful roles, Susan managed to break through the image of Laurie and moved on to star in several TV roles and to achieve Emmy Award and Golden Globe status. Susan Dey was born in Perkin, Illinois on December 10th 1952 to Robert Smith, a newspaper editor and Gail Dey, a nurse. After graduating from Fox Lane High School in Bedford, New York, Susan’s early career choice was that of a model but by the age of eighteen she was spotted by the producers of ‘The Partridge Family’ and won the part of Laurie, daughter of Shirley Jones and sister to David Cassidy’s character, Keith Partridge. During her years as Laurie Partridge, Susan was rumoured to have had a relationship with David Cassidy and to have suffered an eating disorder in an attempt to remain as thin as possible. Eventually, after having her thin physique pointed out to her by fellow actor Danny Bonaduce she began eating normally and soon returned to a normal healthy teen.
In 1976 Susan entered into her first marriage with husband Lenny Hirshan but although the couple produced one daughter, Sarah, born in 1978, they parted after five years of marriage. It was at this time that Susan was offered the role of Sandy in the musical ‘Grease’, but she turned the role down and the part finally went to Olivia Newton John. After the folding of The Partridge Family Susan took on several sleazy roles in an effort to break free from her ‘good girl’ image including the 1981 sexy thriller ‘Looker’ starring Albert Finney and James Coburn. Following this well received movie Susan all but disappeared from the movie and small screen scene. Her revival came in the shape of L.A. attorney, Grace Van Owen in the critically acclaimed crime series L.A. Law which saw Susan starring with the late John Spencer, Harry Hamlin and Corbin Bernsen. The series gave Susan the opportunity to be the winner of Golden Globe Award as "Actress In A Leading Role — Drama Series" in 1987 and was also nominated for the award in the following four years. Her critically hailed role also saw her nominated for the Emmy Award for "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series" for this role in 1987, 1988 and 1989. While conducting her busy schedule filming L.A. Law, Susan found time to meet and marry her second husband, television producer Bernard Sofronski, with whom she is still happily married.
Since the ending of ‘L.A. Law’ Susan has used her celebrity status to bring attention to the crime of rape and has served as a board member of the Rape Treatment Center at UCLA Medical Center and along with her co-star, Corbin Bernsen, has narrated a documentary on campus rape.
