Suzy Amis
Suzy Amis was born January 5, 1962 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. A successful businessman, Amis’ father was the owner and operator of Amis Construction Company and Downtown Airpark in the city of her birth. Amis is known for her acting as well as her modeling.
Her first acting job was a one-episode appearance on Miami Vice opposite Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. Her first film role would not be far off. In 1985, she debuted in Fandango. Notably, the film starred Kevin Costner and Judd Nelson. It was also where Amis would meet future husband Sam Robards, who was no stranger to fame. (His parents were Jason Robards and Lauren Bacall.) Amis immediately followed this outing with an off-Broadway performance in Fresh Horses.
Her next outing was the 1987 film The Big Town. Packed with stars, Amis was among the likes of Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, Tommy Lee Jones and Tom Skerritt. Continuing to find work throughout the 80’s, Amis went on to star in Plain Clothes and Rocket Gibraltar (both 1988). Of the two, Rocket Gibraltar was easily the more well-known and well-received. Its cast included Burt Lancaster, Patricia Clarkson, Bill Pullman, Macaulay Culkin and Kevin Spacey.
In 1990 Amis switched gears slightly to act in the offbeat comedy/drama Where the Heart Is and Twister, which also featured such previously untapped talent as Crispin Glover and Dylan McDermott.
Amis took a small hiatus from filmmaking and returned three years later with Rich in Love, a slow-paced film which in many ways was a homage to the South more than anything else. Albert Finney and Ethan Hawke starred in this often overlooked film which is directed by Driving Miss Daisy’s Bruce Beresford.
In this same year, she made Watch It (1993) with several “before they were famous” costars such as John C. McGinley and Cynthia Stevenson. Peter Gallagher led the film.
1993 also brought Amis’ greatest critical acclaim. She starred in The Ballad of Little Jo—a story about a woman impersonating a male in the Old West in order to escape the fate of either wifehood or prostitution. Based upon a true story, Amis earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination.
Riding off the acclaim from her previous film, Amis landed a starring role in the film Two Small Bodies with Fred Ward providing the other principal character.
By 1994, Amis’ name had enough clout behind it to start taking roles in larger budget films such as Blown Away. The film starred Tommy Lee Jones and Jeff Bridges, while Amis played a smaller part as Bridges’ wife. Completing a creative 180, Amis threw herself next into the independent production Nadja (1994). The film, shot in black and white, was an exploration of the vampire mentality and lifestyle completely unlike most action-packed gore fests of the same genre. Elina Löwensohn played Nadja and earned herself an Independent Spirit Award nomination.
In 1995, Amis became part of her most critically acclaimed project. While her part was relatively small, The Usual Suspects was a tremendous hit with critics and the public alike. Kevin Spacey won an Oscar for his performance, and the cast (Amis included) won the National Board of Review Award for Best Acting by an Ensemble.
Amis went on to take roles in One Good Turn, Cadillac Ranch (both 1996), the made-for-TV film The Beneficiary, Last Stand at Saber River, The Ex, Dead By Midnight, Firestorm, and her most recent project Judgment Day (1999). She also appeared in the veritable Oscar magnet 'Titanic' along side such greats as Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. It was while working on the set that she met her second husband, director James Cameron.
Amis and Robards were married from 1986 to 1994. They had one child together before divorcing. Amis and Cameron wed in June 2000 and are currently still together. They have two children.
