T R Knight
Actor T R Knight was born Theodore Raymond on March 26, 1973 in Minneapolis, Minnesota . When he was five years old, “Teddy”, as he is sometimes known to his family and friends, landed his first role in the Guthrie Theater's annual production of A Christmas Carol, playing Tiny Tim. Also at Guthrie Theater, Knight starred in Amadeus; and played Richard Miller in Ah, Wilderness! After graduating high school, Knight, who has described himself as “not the best student,” decided to forego post-secondary education and instead pursue a career in acting.
After moving to New York , Knight began landing roles in various Broadway productions. In 2001, he starred as Tim Allgood in Noises Off, and in 2003, played Damis in a production of Tartuffe. Also in 2003, Knight received a Drama Desk Award nomination in the category of Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play for his performance in the off-Broadway production of Scattergood. Knight’s other off-Broadway pursuits included playing Joe Macbeth in This Lime Tree Bower, as well as a club kid in The Hologram Theory.
On the small screen, Knight has guest-starred in such series as Frasier (2003), Charlie Lawrence (2003), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2004), CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2004) and Sesame Street (2006) – in which he played a Private “I”.
In 2005, Knight landed his breakthrough role playing the emotional and reticent Dr. George O'Malley in the popular ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy. Fans of the show have been so involved in the relationships of its characters that Knight described being “swatted” by a passer-by on the street, who chastised: “Shame on you for sleeping with Meredith!” Knight has described being instantly drawn to his character, commenting: “I liked that you saw more than just one side of [George].... In a pilot, there’s a lot of information you have to get across, and especially in this case, a lot of characters. I saw more than one side to him. He wasn’t just someone who sticks his foot in his mouth.... You saw him struggle, get hurt. You saw him try to do good.”
Knight has also been subject to some interesting surprises when it comes to props on the set of Grey’s Anatomy. He has commented: “...the weirdest animal product we’ve had to deal with is intestines, sheep intestines. And they don’t smell too good. The thing is also, after eight hours of doing a scene with it, you do get kind of numb to it. It’s like perfume that is too strong. Eventually, you stop smelling it and you’re eating chicken soup next to it. But first, you kind of wonder how you’re gonna necessarily not pull a face while you’re doing a scene and be revealed for the fraud that you are. That you’re not really a doctor. Luckily, we’re wearing masks, so some of our grimaces are covered up.” Three of Knight's Grey's Anatomy co-stars are Patrick Dempsey, Isaiah Washington and Chandra Wilson.
Knight revealed he was gay in late October 2006. In a public statement, he said, “"I guess there have been a few questions about my sexuality, and I'd like to quiet any unnecessary rumors that may be out there. While I prefer to keep my personal life private, I hope the fact that I'm gay isn't the most interesting part of me."
